This was the only F5 tornado of 1992, this tornado killed one person, an 81-year old woman was hit by a collapsing foundation wall while she hid in her basement. She may have been following obsolete safety rules (like leaving doors & windows open to equalize pressure and hiding in the southwest corner of your house). The lack of above ground deaths is a tribute to the watch/warning system and community awareness. In decades past, a massive, rain-wrapped, F5 tornado was likely to be a multiple death killer. The Chandler tornado moved NNE for 16 miles from 2 S of Leota to 6 NE of Chandler, passing through Chandler. Half of Chandler was destroyed. A parallel track of F4 damage occurred at about the same time, a few miles to the northwest. Damage at Chandler, Lake Wilson and rural areas of Murray County (from both tornadoes) was $44000000. Had that parallel track been on the southeast side of the Chandler track, Mr. van Nieuwenhuyzen would have been in mortal danger.  91 views

Minnesota suffered widespread damage and power outages, said Doug Neville, a spokesman for the state's public safety department. He said Gov. Tim Pawlenty was on his way to survey the damage in affected areas. The twisters hit the town of Wadena hard, ripping off roofs and damaging schools, buses and stores. Neville said 14 people had been taken to hospitals, 13 of them in critical condition.
