Duluth Videos

Located on the north shore of Lake Superior, Duluth is the fourth biggest city in Minnesota. That’s pretty impressive, considering that in 1869, its total population consisted of only 14 families.

Although 2300 miles away from the Atlantic, Duluth is that ocean’s westernmost deep-water port, linked via the Great Lakes and Erie Canal and St. Lawrence Seaway passages. Duluth is one half of the so-called “Twin Ports,” sharing that vital function with Superior, WI as one of the most important of the Great Lakes ports.

Native Americans had occupied the Duluth region for thousands of years. Daniel Greysolon, Sieur du Lhut was the first known European explorer to the area. He settled rivalries between the Dakota and Ojibwa nations and employed them to help advance the fur trade with the French. By 1692, the area was so prosperous, the Hudson’s Bay Company established a small trading post there. Thus, Duluth is named in his honor.

In the 1850s, a brief copper mining boom helped build up the area, eventually leading to the mining of iron ore. Today, iron ore is one of the main elements shipped out of the city. After the collapse of the copper boom, timber harvesting replaced it as a main industry.

At the start of the 20th century, Duluth’s status as an industrial powerhouse proved a magnet for immigrants. It became home to one of the largest Finnish communities outside of Finland itself, even publishing several daily Finnish-language newspapers. From 1907 to 1941, the Finnish Socialist Federation operated Work People's College, an institution emphasizing a working-class educational perspective.

Since the early 80s when most of its manufacturing base closed down, Duluth has re-invented itself into a popular tourist town.
