Inspired by Merle Haggard, Marty Robbins, and Dean Martin, he played the club circuit along the Gulf Coast in Florida and used national talent contests as a vehicle for his music. He made the finals of the Wrangler Country Star Search in 1982, then won as a Male Vocalist champ on Ed McMahon's Star Search program in 1988. Even before the release of his debut album, Young Man, he'd already gone on tour as an opening act for Mel Tillis, Gary Morris, and Ronnie Milsap. In the midst of recording, Dean also dabbled in television. He contributed to commercials for Valvoline, McDonald's, and Chevrolet, and had an acting role in the brief Elvis series on ABC-TV in 1990. He landed bit parts on soap operas and dramas, and even hosted the 1994 season of ABC in Concert Country.

Internet Explorer users: click pause before closing One Day Without Shoes 2011 :)running time:03:09 added by:MeganReneaEdwards source: YouTubeSeveral students from East Central Community College in Decatur, Mississippi participated in Toms shoes' One Day Without Shoes this year on April 5. My friends and I really enjoyed participating in ODWS. It was most definitely an eye-opening experience, which is why I decided to use Brandon Heath's Give Me Your Eyes as the background song. My hope is that anyone who sees this video will be inspired to be a part of ODWS every year and go barefoot, just for one day. :)
Black in Time Presents Medgar Evers 01:27

Medgar Evers was the field secretary of the NAACP and a major figure in Civil Rights history. Evers paid the ultimate price for his commitment to the cause of civil rights when he was murdered on June 12th, 1963. Medgar Evers was born in 1925 in Decatur, Mississippi. Evers got his high school diploma by walking twelve miles to school and twelve miles back each week day. During World War II, he joined the American Army and was honourably discharged from it in 1946. Evers returned from an emancipated Europe and decided that the South should be the same - free from tyranny. Ironically for Mississippi, Evers had no problems registering to vote for the 1948 election. However, as the vote neared, his family was subjected to more and more threats. When the voting day arrived, Evers and his brother Charlie found that about 200 white men blocked their way to the polling station. They never got to vote. Instead both young men joined the NAACP. Evers became one of the best known and most vocal members of the NAACP in the state. On June 12th, 1963, President John F. Kenned addressed the nation on civil rights and stated that there would be federal support to push forward integration. Evers had worked all day and returned home late at night. As he got out of his car, he was shot in the back only steps away from his door and died fifty minutes later in hospital.
