Chapel Hill - Carrboro City Schools (CHCCS) Community Connection Program continues its efforts to eliminate the digital divide among district students by partnering with General Services Corporation to implement a pilot computer lab at the Carolina Apartment Complex in Carrboro. The computer lab will formally open on July 1, during a launch celebration for community residents from 3:00 pm - 6:00 pm.

The computer lab will allow student residents to access the Internet and continue their academic advancement during the summer months.  In addition, the CHCCS Instructional Services Division will furnish each computer with Rosetta Stone English Language software so that ESL students can enhance their English proficiency.

The lab will be equipped with computers donated by The Kramden Institute, Inc of Durham. For the past year, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Community Connection Program has partnered with the Kramden Institute, to provide 150 underprivileged students with in-home computers.

"We need a diverse tool box of services to ensure that all district students have Internet access. Community based computer labs are another means of providing students convenient access," said Renny Johnson, CHCCS Community Connection Program manager.

General Services Corporation manages 17 other apartment complexes throughout Chapel Hill and Carrboro. Plans are being developed to deploy computer labs in these communities in the future.
