History:

North Platte has a rich history dating back to before it was organized as a city in 1874. The town was plotted along the Union Pacific Railroad lines and is a geographic center maintaining a nearly equal distance between Denver and Omaha. Today, US Highway 83 divides the town running North and South, US Highway 30 and I-80 run through and along side the town. The town is nestled between the North and South Platte rivers that connect just east of North Platte.

The city has been home to several prominent historical people. One of the most famous was Colonel William F. Cody, known world-wide as Buffalo Bill, he made North Platte his home for more than 30 years. His home and Scout's Rest Ranch, now Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park, is preserved as a Nebraska State Historical Park.

Glenn Miller, born Alton Glen Miller, once lived in North Platte.

North Platte is home to Bailey Yard, owned and operated by the Union Pacific Railroad, it is considered the largest classification yard in the world. The Union Pacific Railroad with the efforts of many other supporters are in the process of designing a new visitor's center, The Golden Spike.

During World War II, North Platte was a welcome stop for more than 6 million service men and women whose troop trains were greeted at the North Platte Canteen.

North Platte is home to a new monument dedicated to all 20th Century veterans from all branches of service.
