In the 1990's, Black culture ignited aesthetic revolutions across music, fashion, film and TV. 1990’s aesthetics are making a come-back in the 2020s, and many of the iconic shows and movies of the time are finding new meaning and relevance with younger generations around the world. This panel brings together legendary directors, writers, and actors to explore how Black representation, in form and content, has evolved from the 1990s to today. What is it about the 1990s that stays so fresh and keeps inspiring us today?

On June 18th 2022, to celebrate the Emmy season and our screening series Perpetratin’ Realism, the American Cinematheque is partnering with the African American Film Critics Association for a lively discussion on the evolution of Black representation and cultural identity from the 1990s to today.
