Upcoming Community Events at the Asheville Art Museum

Asheville, NC —The Asheville Art Museum offers a wide range of creative and educational programs for youth and adults throughout the year. Programs and events invite visitors to explore artworks featured in exhibitions and the Museum’s Collection, to discuss current topics as they relate to art, to get creative with hands-on projects, and more.

Steve Lapointe’s nine years of classical piano as a youth grounded him in music theory. Jazz studies while in Ithaca, NY opened his ears to extemporaneous improvisation and the music of Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, Michel Petrucciani, and the American songbook. Steve served as musical director of the Unitarian Universalist (UU) Fellowship of Vero Beach, Florida, and occasionally performed for the UU Asheville congregation.

Grab your friends and join us each Sunday in the rooftop Perspective Café and Sculpture Terrace to play an assortment of board and card games. You can even bring your own favorite games to share with new friends. The Café will be offering special snacks and cocktails for Game Day, including $6 local craft beers and ciders and freshly popped, old-fashioned popcorn to enjoy while you play and create a memorable afternoon. Enjoy the galleries and then head up to the rooftop!

Public Tour: Too Much Is Just Right

Join us for a guided tour of this exhibition featuring more than 70 artworks in an array of media from both the original time frame of the Pattern and Decoration movement from 1972 to 1985, as well as contemporary artworks created between 1985 and the present. Artworks from the 21st century elucidate contemporary perspectives on the employment of pattern to inform visual vocabularies and investigations of diverse themes in the present day.

Join us in the Museum’s Windgate Foundation Atrium for a gentle flow yoga class, followed by a social time with free coffee or tea and a fresh-baked pastry at the Perspective Café on the Museum’s rooftop. This 60-minute class features gentle stretching and strengthening aimed to restore the body and mind, with a special focus on breathing, body awareness, and mindset care. All-levels are welcome. Please bring your own mat. Reserve your spot soon; there’s only capacity for 20 participants per class. Register here.

Tea Party at the Perspective Café

Treat yourself to a social afternoon filled with whimsy and fun while sampling our exquisite, in-house offerings at the Perspective Café. This afternoon tea party features local indulgences from Asheville Tea Company, as well as fresh tea sandwiches, scones, fruit, and pastries. The afternoon also includes the opportunity to design and create your own Fascinator Hat in our art studio and a stroll through the galleries. We also welcome bringing your own favorite hat and arriving for tea at 3pm.

Ticket includes Museum admission, studio time, tea and accompaniments, and gratuity. Members receive 10 percent discount. Register here.

Come have a drink and experiment with art materials while connecting with your community! Asheville Art Museum will host Open Studio at Different Wrld on the the first Thursday evening of each month throughout the year.

This free drop-in program, which is facilitated by the Asheville Art Museum and hosted at Different Wrld, aims to expose and engage participants with the Museum’s Collection and changing exhibitions. Attendees must be 21 or older to participate. The Asheville Art Museum will provide all instruction, supplies, and materials.

This Thursday participants will create animal key chains, pins, earrings, or mug charms that are inspired by our current exhibition, Natural Collector, which focuses on wood-based art and themes of nature. Materials used include beads, key chains, needles, thread, earrings, and pins.

Drop in for this Friday’s Art Break and join guest curators Marilyn Laufer and Tom Butler as they lead an informal Gallery discussion about the new exhibition, Too Much Is Just Right, which showcases more than 70 artworks in an array of media from both the original time frame of the Pattern and Decoration movement, as well as contemporary artworks created between 1985 and the present.

Public Tour: Altruistic Genius: Buckminster Fuller’s Plans to Save the Planet
Thursday, April 20 -6–7pm -Appleby Foundation Exhibition Hall -Level 1
Free for Members or included with Museum admission. Registration is not required.
Join us for a guided tour of our new exhibition. Altruistic Genius brings the inventions and designs of R. Buckminster Fuller (Milton, MA 1895–1983, Los Angeles, CA) to Western North Carolina and introduces visitors to Fuller’s strategies for the sustainability of humans and the planet relating to housing, transportation, mathematics, and engineering.

Makerspace: Third Thursday
Thursday, April 20 -5–8pm -John & Robyn Horn Education Center -Level 3
Free for Members or included with Museum admission. Registration is not required.
Drop into John & Robyn Horn Education Center to experiment freely and collaborate using different materials, tools, and techniques! Visit a chosen artwork in the galleries for inspiration, then head to the studio to create. All ages and abilities are welcome. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Please note: to ensure all participants have time and space to create, we may ask you to limit your studio time.

Adult Studio: Introduction to Natural Dyes with Kristin Arzt
Saturday and Sunday, April 22 and April 23 -Noon–5pm -John & Robyn Horn Education Center -Level 3

$105 for two days, Museum Members receive a 10 percent discount; Two equity seats offered at $25 for BIPOC students
Explore how natural dyes can create limitless colors, hues, and values on fabric. Using natural indigo, madder, and weld, create an entire rainbow of colors! Dyeing both silk and cotton fibers, learn how to prepare different types of fibers for dyeing. Participants are welcome to bring in their own small natural fiber items to dye.

Asheville Chamber Music Series: Rising Star Concert Featuring the Arsevi Duo

The third concert in the new Rising Star Concert Series, presented by the Asheville Chamber Music Series in collaboration with the Asheville Art Museum, will take place in the Windgate Foundation Atrium of the Asheville Art Museum. The featured ensemble will be Arsevi Duo, a group of young musicians embarking on a major concert career and representing music excellence in North Carolina. Reserve your spot now. The two previous concerts sold out!
