Aspen Film Executive Director's Letter: January 2023

Government and Politics

January 11, 2023

From: Aspen Filmfest

Hello Friends of Film,

Happy 2023! We hope you enjoyed great holidays and some of the incredible snow that has blanketed Aspen. What a season!

We also hope you experienced some of our Academy Screenings offerings in December - it was a phenomenal festival, and kicking things off with Kate Hudson and GLASS ONION, along with director Scott Cooper and his film THE PALE BLUE EYE was a real treat.

We plan to bring more special screenings with guests to you over the coming year, and have our next event this Thursday, January 12:
We will be screening Jonathan Gruber’s documentary UPHEAVAL: THE JOURNEY OF MENACHEM BEGIN at the Isis Theatre as a benefit for JOINLIFELINE, which provides aid to impoverished elderly people in Israel.

I will host a conversation with the film’s Executive Producer, Rob Schwartz, following this informative and engaging film.

At our February Indie Showcase, Wednesday, February 1, we will present Jean-Luc Godard’s classic film BREATHLESS (1960), starring Jean Seberg and Jean-Paul Belmondo, to pay homage to the director who passed away in September 2022. Godard was a bold innovator who influenced the French New Wave cinema movement.

“After 50 years, Jean-Luc Godard's “Breathless” still defies conventional expectations
about what a movie should be.”
-A.O. Scott, The New York Times

“This movie liberated the cinema -- the stories you could tell and the ways you could tell them -- as clearly and cleanly as Picasso freed painting and the Sex Pistols rebooted rock.”
-Ty Burr, Boston Globe

“There is simply no other film which demonstrates so perfectly what it feels like
to be young and in love.”
-Peter Bradshaw, Guardian

Huge thanks to everyone who made our End of Year Giving Campaign a resounding success! With your support, we hit our goal of bringing in $30K, which was matched by a generous donor, earning Aspen Film over $60K. This is fantastic for the organization and we could not be more appreciative of your support - thank you again for helping us end the year on such a high note.

We’re excited for 2023, and have some terrific screenings and events in the works. Several of these will be exclusively for Aspen Film Members (membership does matter), so if you are interested in joining our film community, please view our membership opportunities here.

Looking forward to seeing you at the cinema!

Warm regards,
