From the Pastor

Get ready for Weird Church

After his first election, New England Synod Bishop held forth at a conference wearing lab goggles to encourage experimentation in the church. Try things! Try things you’ve never tried before. Be ready for failure, and learn from it.

Now in his second term at the 2022 June New England Assembly, Bishop Hazelwood interviewed various people on comfy chairs on the dais front and center to hear about their collaborations, partnering with other churches, with non-profits, with neighboring schools, etc. The only way forward is to rely on exploring relationships.

Here at Bethesda your leadership, i.e., the Congregation Council is looking to “brand” what’s next for our ministry something like Bethesda’s Sustainable Future, which might be otherwise known as Weird Church. We will need to try things and things we’ve never tried before. We will need to collaborate, partnering with those we know and those we may only just meet.

We have a vital ministry. We have a rich history.  But we cannot keep our current way of doing things, support our big old building, continue with our current model of congregational life indefinitely, and finance our ministry long term.  Instead we have to imagine new models. We have to invite new partnerships. We have to think about what we might give up and what we might welcome.

We’d like input from you. We’d like to listen, tell stories, make new friends in New Haven, and risk venturing like we’ve never done before. It’s exciting. It’s scary. And it will involve prayer, and mutuality.

Come to the August 14 congregational meeting to hear about what the Congregational Council is looking to try, with your approval. See the invitation elsewhere in this enews.

It’s about to get interesting. And weird.

And we pray, blessed.

Pastor Tim

Quite a few of the newer faith communities being planted in America are, in part, Innovation Labs. Much of what they try will be short-lived or never take deep root. But from their learning, we will all profit. Every now and then they will discover a promising new approach to engaging people of in a faith community. There is a maiden voyage for everything. A lot of them get about as far as the Titanic. Several of the paradigms of church that we articulate in this book started as experiments. They were attempted by risk takers who care about the people who did not fit or fell drawn to existing expressions of church.--from Weird Church: Welcome to the Twenty-First Century, by Beth Ann Estock and Paul Nixon

The Congregation Council is calling for a congregational meeting with this two-week notice required by Bethesda’s constitution for Sunday, August 7 after worship. The agenda is to deliberate and vote on these recommendations:

CCA Volunteering Opportunities

Charmain Yun, Director of Administration and Planning at CCA, shares the following message about upcoming volunteer opportunities:

8/4 (Thursday): Organize our ARISE Center Professional Closet and sort through bags of clothes, a few hours at 158 Davenport

Back to School clothes for kids in shelter by 8/19: This is a bigger project, especially if you represent a group who could come together for this. We already have some donors who have adopted some kids, but we could have as many as 20-25 additional kids who will need clothes--ideally a set of 2 shirts, 2 pants/skirts, packs of socks and shoes for each kid ($40-50 each). Let me know if you are interested in organizing this big project and I can give you more specifics.

You can reach Charmain at [email protected] or (203) 691-0307.
