Bike New Yorker, Do You Give a Fleet ?

Bike New Yorker

This holiday season, we are most thankful for being able to provide free bike education to people around New York City. But, did you know our Community Education Centers contain a total of 500 bikes? Making sure students have safe bikes is no easy task, so we've decided to kick off this season of thanks–and our Giving Tuesday fundraiser–with an interview of our new Bike Fleet Manager, Rose Sylvester.

This November, we ask that you "Give a Fleet." We can expand our work by boosting our bike fleet, and our $20,000 fundraising goal would allow us to update bike fleets at two Community Education Centers. All bikes replaced will go to our shop, Recycle-A-Bicycle, where they will be refurbished and repurposed, keeping the bikes on the road and out of the landfill. Can we count on you?

Bike Education

We can't believe our bike education program was featured on a Japanese TV Show! Check out their @NYC segment for interviews with Adult Learn-to-Ride students, footage of our McCarren Park education center, and an interview with our Education Director, Rich Conroy. Remember to use the password “BikeNY” to access the video.

Class alert! Are you ready to take your bike riding to new temperatures? Make sure to register for our Virtual Winter Cycling 101 Class, happening on November 3.

Recycle-A-Bicycle

On October 22, Recycle-A-Bicycle participated in Open House New York at the Brooklyn Navy Yard, where visitors explored the Yard and visited over 50 businesses that call the Yard home. It was such a fun time!

Want more Community Rides? Join Recycle-A-Bicycle for loops around Prospect Park Tomorrow, November 2. Helmets on promptly at 6:15 pm.

Notes from the Info Desk

Reader JG writes: What kind of bike helmet should I use?

When you go to buy a helmet, keep these things in mind:

- Make sure it’s Snell or ASTM (ANSI) certified for safety.

- Any helmet you wear should be snug but not too tight; go for one that doesn’t have any front-to-back or side-to-side wiggle room.

- The front of your helmet should be no more than one inch above your eyebrows, so your forehead is protected.

- Choose a helmet that suits your style. Choose a helmet with many ventilation holes if you tend to sweat or get hot while riding. For winter or cold-weather cycling, you may want to wear a bucket-style helmet.

- Make sure to fit your helmet before you take it out for a spin – here’s a great helmet-fitting video!
