Homecoming – or HOCO as the students call it – is a special time in the Bay Village City School District. Thursday night’s Light the Night walk and Bonfire event was outstanding. It was great to see so many families and residents come out to honor and memorialize loved ones affected by cancer. Congratulations to Bay High School for raising more than $6,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Capping off the evening with the longstanding bonfire tradition was also memorable.

Of course the Homecoming Parade was so much fun. I enjoyed walking with the Board of Education, tossing candy to current and future students. Now that my wife Leah and I are Bay residents, the “candy parade” is even more meaningful.

On Saturday, I was honored to attend and speak at the sold-out Alumni Brunch to honor and celebrate our 2023 Distinguished Alumni and Educator Hall of Fame Class, and then attend the Homecoming Dance to see future alumni all dressed up and making memories with their peers.

Homecoming Week wrapped up Sunday with Bay High School’s Centennial campaign honored as “Project of the Year” by the Bay Village Community Council. Bay High was in great company as Sherri Reilly was awarded “Citizen of the Year” for her dedication to the Bay Village Community Garden on behalf of the Village Project. Congratulations, Sherri!

Thank you to Bay High School Principal Jason Martin and his assistant Lysa Kenney, and everyone else who had a part in making Homecoming 2023 a huge success for the district and the city. The support, participation and tradition are impressive.

Continue to Be Proud To Be Bay, and I look forward to seeing you soon!

State Report Card Results: Bay Village Schools Earns ‘5-Star’ Overall Rating

On September 14, the Ohio Department of Education released the 2022-23 State Report Card results for the 607 public school districts in the state. Bay Village City School District is proud to announce it received an overall 5-star rating on the report card. Five stars is the highest possible rating a district can achieve. Bay Village Schools’ Performance Index increased from 104.94 to 106.6. The district is ranked #5 in Northeast Ohio and #15 in the State of Ohio by its Performance Index.

“This is a success to be celebrated by all,” said Superintendent Scot Prebles. “We are especially proud that each of our buildings improved and that our Early Literacy component increased by more than 20%. We congratulate our students and staff.”

Bay Village Schools is proud to announce that four students have been recognized in the 2024 National Merit® Scholarship Program, an annual academic competition for recognition and college undergraduate scholarships. Bay High School Again Named a ‘Best High School’

Bay High School has consistently been named a “Best High School” by U.S. News & World Report since 2006. This year, Bay High is ranked #7 in Northeast Ohio and #24 in the State (up two places from last year).

Bay High Senior Named to All-State Band

Bay High Senior Ewan Moss was named to the All-State Band on Trombone. He is one of eight in the entire state. Ewan will perform at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Conference in Columbus this February.

Bay High School Junior Breaks School Record

Recently, Bay High Junior Tessa Knapp broke the school record for career goals in girls soccer with 108 against Kenston earlier this month. This photo by David Cleveland shows Tessa with the former record holder, Judi Aschenbrener, who set the prior record of 107 in 1999. Tessa currently has 119 goals as of press time, and has verbally committed to attend the University of Notre Dame to continue her academic and athletic career. She needs 16 more points to break Aschenbrener’s career points record of 285. Stay tuned.

Bay Village Schools Athletic Director Named AD of the Year

Last spring Athletic and Activities Director Matt Spellman received the Northeast Ohio Athletic Director of the Year award, and recently, he was named an Ohio Athletic Director of the Year recipient by the Ohio Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association (OIAAA). The award honors “those doing exemplary work with the young people, coaches and communities of Ohio.” Spellman will be recognized at the OIAAA Conference this November.
