Over the last two weeks, APPD has been putting on several training classes on active attack events, and there are still several more training classes scheduled this summer.

Last week APPD training staff hosted the Active Attack Integrated Response (AAIR) Instructor Class. This 5-day course focuses on integrating Police, Fire, EMS, and Dispatch for an active attack or mass casualty event. This course was instructed by Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT), who are the leaders in active attack response training throughout the United States. Because of this class, there are now 15 new ALERRT AAIR instructors in Texas, with 8 of those being our own local first responders. This class was in preparation for two AAIR courses we will be instructing next month. For next month's classes, APPD has partnered with APISD staff and administrators to include them in this integrated training. Staff and administrators will receive hands-on training for their roles and responsibilities should an event ever happen at one of our schools.

This week we have been busy with the Active Attack for School-Based Law-Enforcement class. This course is required for all school resource officers but is excellent training for all law enforcement officers. This two-day course covered topics related to a single officer and two-officer response to an active threat or active attack event. Student officers were placed in numerous force-on-force scenarios where they had to make split-second decisions about their responses to these events. This course also covered basic medical skills, which officers can administer before medical personnel is able to enter the location. Nineteen area officers took part in this training course.

The following agencies were represented in our training classes over the last two weeks: Aransas Pass PD, Aransas Pass FD, Tri-County EMS, Portland PD, Taft PD, Port Lavaca PD, Refugio PD, Allen FD, McKenney PD, Sinton PD, George West PD, Woodsboro PD, Department of Homeland Security, and Texas Parks and Wildlife.

We want to give special thanks to Mr. Bennett, Mr. Seagert, and the APISD staff, who are always willing to work with us to put these training courses on in our schools. The janitorial staff at Charlie Marshall elementary get a huge shout-out for being overly hospitable to us over these last several weeks and for rearranging their schedules and duties to ensure we had a place to train.

Last but not least, thanks to the Aransas Pass Public Safety Explorer Program and the Aransas Pass Aquatic Center for providing actors and actresses for our role-play scenarios.
