City of Brookings Chief Financial Officer Erick Rangel has resigned, effective Feb. 17, after four years in the position.

Rangel joined the City of Brookings in January 2019 as the first CFO, bringing nearly 15 years of private-sector experience with him. The position was created to incorporate strategic thinking into all facets of the City’s finances in order to ensure long-term sustainability and effective communication.

“Erick brought private-sector ideologies to his position,” said City Manager Paul Briseno. “He has provided exceptional leadership to the Finance Department, the Liquor Store and the Swiftel Center, all of which he was responsible for overseeing.

“Reflecting on Erick’s tenure, he has helped ensure the City of Brookings is in a strong financial position for the foreseeable future,” Briseno continued. “More importantly, he assisted in developing individuals and communicating our position to the organization and the public. I am forever grateful for his commitment to the organization and community.”

Rangel said moving on from the City was a difficult career-driven decision for him. “This organization has provided me with the opportunity to build great friendships and to grow exponentially both personally and professionally,” he said. “I am so proud of what we have achieved as an organization with limited resources and excited about where we are going. Our high-performing culture of innovation, collaboration and teamwork surpasses that of any organization I have worked for. The opportunity of advancing my professional career comes with a high price, which is not being part of this organization, but at this point, I believe it’s the right professional move.”

Rangel’s new job will allow him to continue to live in Brookings. “Since day one, the Brookings community has made me feel at home. I’ve become an avid SDSU sports fan and I am committed to continuing to collaborate in initiatives that advance our City’s position as leaders in innovation, quality of life and strategic economic growth,” he said.

“I would like to thank the City Council, our city manager and the entire organization for allowing me the opportunity to be part of a great team that continues to make material strides in achieving our City’s strategic vision,” Rangel added.

Briseno said a national search for the next CFO will begin in a few weeks. Once open, the position will be posted on the City of Brookings website at https://www.cityofbrookings-sd.gov.
