The State of California has proclaimed a State of Emergency in response to a heat wave that is forecasted to bring record temperatures throughout the State. The City of Cupertino's Office of Emergency Management (OEM) is assessing the potential impacts on Cupertino.

In addition, the National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for the weekend beginning Saturday, September 3 through Tuesday, September 6. The California Independent System Operator (ISO) has also issued Flex Alerts to call on Californians for voluntary energy conservation, particularly between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. Rolling blackouts may be necessary as early as tonight.

The Santa Clara County Library District will operate their libraries as cooling centers during regular operating hours over the weekend. The Cupertino Library will be open from 10 a.m. through 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 3 and Sunday, September 4 but closed on Monday, September 5 for the Labor Day holiday.

The City will open the City Hall lobby as a cooling center from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday, September 5 for residents and community members seeking relief from the heat. OEM staff and volunteers from the Cupertino Citizen Corps will staff the cooling center.
