CUPERTINO, CA – On Monday, November 14, Lehigh Hanson, Inc. announced that clinker production at its Lehigh Southwest Cement Company’s Permanente Plant in Cupertino will not restart, and the cement kiln will be permanently shut down.

“We are gratified by the cessation of mining activities in the midst of what is now a significantly populated area,” stated Mayor Darcy Paul. “Our entire community has, over the years, raised environmental and health-related awareness here. Much work remains to be done, but this announcement is encouraging.”

The Lehigh Hanson Cement Plant is located off of Stevens Creek Boulevard. Over the years, the City of Cupertino has maintained an active interest in Lehigh’s operations, particularly as they may impact health and safety within the City. Lehigh’s announcement comes after a long history of concerns surrounding environmental violations at the plant.

The facility has not operated its cement kiln since April 2020 but will continue other ongoing operations as long-term strategies for the property are evaluated. Lehigh plans to develop and submit a new reclamation plan amendment application.

Lehigh Hanson will participate in the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisor’s Housing, Land Use, Environment and Transportation Committee meeting this Thursday, November 17 at 10 a.m. To view the agenda and find information about participating in the meeting, click here.
