Dearborn Hills to reopen spring 2023
Closed since 2021 after severe flood damage, the golf course will initially offer only the back nine holes as further logjam mitigation occurs

Dearborn, MI – Area golfers will have cause for celebration later this spring when Dearborn Hills, the only municipally-owned and operated course in Dearborn, reopens to the public.

Golf has been played on this site since 1923, when long-time Dearborn resident, Robert Herndon, built and opened the course.  When Herndon died in 1986, he deeded the course to the City.

Dearborn Mayor Abdullah H. Hammoud stated, “We are pleased to announce the reopening of the Dearborn Hills golf course, and acknowledge its legacy and importance to local recreation.”

The course was forced to close intermittently during the 2021 season when severe storms swept through the area, resulting in unprecedented flooding and damage to the course, rendering it unplayable for several days at a time. The flooding was exacerbated by logjams on the Rouge River, most of which were well west of the course and further up-river.

A decision was subsequently made not to open the course for the 2022 season, allowing the grounds to recover and heal from the previous year’s destructive floods.

When the course reopens this spring, only the back nine holes will be available for golfers.

“We still have logjam mitigation work to do along the river on the west side of Telegraph to prevent—as best we can—the catastrophic flood damage of these last few years,” explained Hammoud.

When the course reopens, it will resume hosting nine-hole leagues and golf outings, while also accommodating patrons who are not part of a league or golf outing.

Information concerning the booking of leagues or golf outings can be found on the course’s website, dearbornhills.com.
