Library receives grant for dual language literacy
Focus on dual language literacy at Dearborn Public Library's Esper Branch seeks to improve literacy through fun and educational learning activities, bilingual signage overhaul

DEARBORN, MI – The Dearborn Public Library acknowledges the receipt of a $20,920 grant for Improving Access to Information through the Library Services and Technology Act.

This funding will help the library focus on creating a more inclusive and accessible space for Arabic-speaking community members through offering bilingual story times and corresponding literacy activities; as well as overhauling signage at Esper Branch Library to provide information in standard Arabic and English. The new indoor and outdoor signage will include restroom signs, directional signs, and more.

The Library will provide in-person educational programs, games, and activities in dual languages. These activities aim to nurture a love of reading, reinforce literacy skills, facilitate the learning process, encourage critical thinking, support educational success, and promote cultural inclusion.

Administrative Librarian Patty Podzikowski stated, “We are thrilled to be able to expand library programming to better serve our community. These various activities will allow us to reach more people, support literacy, and allow children to learn while having fun in a safe space.”

These programs and more can be found on the Library’s events calendar at dearbornlibrary.org. Follow the Dearborn Public Library’s social media for more announcements and updates.

These activities are funded in part by a Library Services and Technology grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services administered by the Library of Michigan.
