City of Hoover - Mayor Brocato's Weekly Update For September 30, 2022

HOOVER MET GOES TO CASHLESS SYSTEM IN OCTOBER

Starting Monday, October 3, 2022, the Hoover Met Complex will become a cash-free facility. This means cash will no longer be accepted when purchasing tickets or food at concession stands that are connected directed to the facility. Only credit or debit cards will be allowed or the digital wallet options of Apple Pay or Google Pay.

There are a few exceptions. Outside vendors and event holders would have the discretion on whether they will accept cash or not. For example, cash will still be accepted at Hoover High School football games because concession stands are operated by Hoover High Booster Club volunteers serving as outside vendors. But if patrons purchase food in the Met food court or at a Met concession stand that is operated by Met staff or staff hired by the Met, those transactions must be completed with a card or through a digital wallet option.

"We are looking forward to the numerous benefits once we go cashless at our venue," says Met General Manager Shannon Ealy. "Consumeres that visit our complex will enjoy faster service and contactless payment options.”

Going cashless is a trend that is taking place across the country.  In reaction to Covid-19, many stadiums and event venues have converted to transactions with mobile or card payments in an effort to reduce customer touchpoints.

In a recent study by Visa, nearly 65% of consumers said they would rather use a contactless form of payment following the Covid-19 pandemic.  The thought behind it is that with a focus on cleanliness and reducing unnecessary contact, athletes and visitors will not need to handle any paper or coin money.

Many say going cashless has also increased the speed and efficiency of transactions, thereby reducing food and beverage lines. This new policy also avoids worrying about receiving correct change in a cash transaction.
