KIB’s November Celebrations

Texas Arbor Day is celebrated in November, and Irving holds its event at an IISD school that has shown outstanding environmental stewardship and recycling efforts. This year’s honoree, Barton Elementary, welcomed the mayor and other dignitaries to the school on Nov. 11. Earlier that day, the Urban Forestry Team had planted a 95-gallon Shumard red oak tree on school grounds. Mayor Stopfer read a proclamation, KIB presented a trophy, and the rain stopped just in time for the students get a picture with the new tree.

November is also the month to celebrate America Recycles Day (ARD), and KIB did this in two ways. From Nov. 1-15, volunteers posted pictures to social media using the hashtag #IrvingRecycles2022 and “showed us how they recycle.” A total of 48 volunteers (10 adults and 38 youth) participated, giving 45 hours and collecting 7 bags of recyclables. On the actual ARD date, Nov. 15, KIB visited the Heritage Senior Center and promoted recycling by giving away reusable shopping bags, recycled books and blue recycling bags.

Another group of children enjoyed painting birdhouses, this time the Lee Park Recreation Center after-school program. KIB visited on Nov. 2, and also gave away KIB backpacks and environmental activity books.

Mentor Texas employees partnered with KIB on Nov. 10 to paint metal railings on a bridge at T.W. Richardson Grove Park. The 10 volunteers gave 30 hours in this project.

The Porters’ “Unite For Troops” Veterans Day event returned this year, on Saturday, Nov. 12. KIB brought our table, complete with spinning prize wheel, books donated by Friends of the Library, and other giveaway items. KIB also provided the recycling.

Twelve Home Depot employees gave 36 hours by constructing items from kits, including 12 birdhouses, 32 scarecrow napkin holders and 33 fire rescue boats, which they donated to KIB.

KIB welcomed two new board members, Dallas College - North Lake professor Dr. Roy Vu and longtime KIB volunteer Dillon Harmon. The open position on the Executive Board was also filled, as Karen Harmon was elected to become our new Vice President. We look forward to another great year in 2023 under the strong leadership of our KIB Board.
