From: City Of Nacogdoches

The City of Nacogdoches Parks Department is very excited to embark on a Highway 59 Median Beautification Project. This beautification project will focus on the current entrance to Nacogdoches along Highway 59 North. These medians are currently covered with turf grass that requires weekly mowing by City Staff.

In a effort to create a more beautiful, low maintenance and environmentally friendly entrance to Nacogdoches, the City is partnering with TxDOT, the USDA NRCS East Texas Plant Materials Center, and the Texas Native Seeds Program which is part of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute at Texas A&M University-Kingsville to beautify 3 sections of median.

The medians will be sprayed with herbicide to eradicate the turf grass and then in early 2023 low-growing native grasses and wildflowers will be planted. Not only will this new ground cover require less maintenance, but it will also aid in erosion control and help to mitigate stormwater runoff.

Overall this is a more environmentally friendly option as well as allowing for a prettier entrance to welcome residents and visitors to town. Site preparation will begin in the coming weeks with planting scheduled for February 2023. We are very thankful for our partners and look forward to having a beautiful entrance into the City of Nacogdoches.
