City’s sirens will be activated individually during evaluation

NAPERVILLE, Ill. — Annual maintenance will take place on the City’s outdoor warning sirens beginning Monday, Oct. 10. During this time, the City’s warning siren contractor Braniff will activate each of the City’s outdoor warning sirens individually for evaluation. Residents should not be alarmed if they hear the sirens during periods of calm weather. Audible testing each day will only take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The City anticipates the routine maintenance to be complete by Oct. 14.

This annual maintenance is unrelated to the nationwide changes that were made earlier this year by the siren manufacturer following an investigation into why Naperville’s sirens did not activate during the July 23, 2022 tornadoes. The resolution of that issue is available in a Manager’s Memorandum released Aug. 4, 2022.

The City reminds residents that outdoor warning sirens are activated for the purpose of alerting people who are outdoors that a tornado warning has been issued for the Naperville area. When an outdoor warning siren is heard during severe weather, it is imperative to find shelter immediately. In addition to the outdoor sirens, residents are encouraged to monitor their preferred local media outlet, NOAA Weather Radio or the National Weather Service website at www.weather.gov for the latest weather forecasts.
