Brevard County, FL - Residential waste collection in South Brevard County will experience delays that could see pickup in some areas continuing into Saturday following a fire at the County’s Sarno Transfer Station in Melbourne that knocked out power both to the plant and to a backup generator.

The fire occurred Thursday and remains under investigation. As of Friday morning, there was no indication of how long it would take to restore power to the station. As a result, Waste Management has been notified and will temporarily have to haul loads normally transported to Sarno to the Cocoa Landfill instead. Solid Waste Director Euripedes Rodriguez said the additional haul will take additional time, therefore slowing down residential waste collection in Board of County Commission Districts 3, 4 and 5.

The outages will also delay collection from area residents who haul waste to the Sarno plant. Rodriguez said extra-long lines should be anticipated since it will increase by much as three to four times the amount of time to get through the scale house.

“Everyone in south county will be collected as much as possible today,” Rodriguez said. “Unfortunately, we expect routes won’t be finished today and will spill into Saturday.”
