From: Maryland Governor Wes Moore

ANNAPOLIS, MD — Governor Moore released the following statement regarding the 60th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Gideon v. Wainwright decision:

“This weekend marked 60 years since the Supreme Court's landmark Gideon v. Wainwright decision guaranteed the right to an attorney in criminal cases regardless of the defendant's ability to pay. The decision was transformative and consequential in establishing public defenders as a core part of America's judicial system. The role of public defenders cannot be understated; they are critical to ensuring public safety, enhancing government accountability, and promoting equal justice under law. In support of the Office of the Public Defender, my administration has proposed nearly $4 million in funding and increased salaries for attorneys, in addition to adding more than 40 new positions to reduce excessive caseloads and support the agency's mission. We salute the work of these tireless public servants and pledge continued support as we move forward in partnership to make community safety and equitable justice attainable for all Marylanders.”
