Governor Walz Appoints Margaret Zadra to Serve as the Ombudsperson for Corrections

[ST. PAUL, MN] – Governor Tim Walz today announced the appointment of Margaret Zadra to serve as the Ombudsperson for Corrections. Margaret Zadra has served as Interim Ombudsperson since January 2022.

“Margaret Zadra ensures Minnesota’s criminal justice system justly serves all those involved, including those who work in corrections, those who are incarcerated, and their families,” said Governor Walz. “Margaret’s leadership experience and commitment to justice will serve her well in this continued work.”

“I look forward to seeing the great work Margaret Zadra will accomplish as she continues to lead this important office,” said Lieutenant Governor Flanagan. “We’re grateful for Margaret’s willingness to step up and serve since January – her work to create a safer, more just department is important for Minnesotans across the state.”

“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served as Interim Ombudsperson for Corrections and am honored to be selected to continue leading this office to promote the highest standards of justice within corrections,” said Margaret Zadra. “I am proud to continue leading a talented team that works to increase safety, wellbeing, equity, accountability, and transparency within corrections—promoting safer and more just communities for all Minnesotans.”

About Margaret Zadra

Margaret Zadra has worked in the Office of the Ombudsperson for Corrections for over two years and has served as the Interim Ombudsperson since January 2022. Prior to her current role, Zadra worked in community organizing, issue and electoral campaign management, and legislative research. Additionally, she has over 13 years of experience in direct practice social services working with youth and those experiencing homelessness. Zadra earned her bachelor’s degree in social work from St. Catherine University.

About the Office of the Ombudsperson for Corrections

The Office of the Ombudsperson for Corrections serves as a neutral arbiter to field and investigate complaints regarding state prisons and county jails. The Ombudsperson also provides policy recommendations to the Commissioner of Corrections.
