In 2022, Gov. Whitmer is making the largest investment in state roads and bridges in Michigan’s history  

LANSING, MI -- On May 25th, Governor Gretchen Whitmer announced that major road repair projects, lane closures and road detours are expected to begin next week across the state. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) projects include I-94 ramp work in Jackson, US-41/M-28 resurfacing project in Baraga County, the I-496 Rebuilding Michigan project in Ingham County, M-46 resurfacing in Sanilac County, M-140 bridge repairs in Watervliet in Berrien County, bridge rebuilding in Mackinaw City in Emmet and Cheboygan counties and rebuilding 15 Mile Road bridge over I-94 in Calhoun County. These investments are expected to support over 5,427 jobs.  

“Across Michigan, we are fixing the damn roads to save motorists time and money. Investments like these in Baraga, Berrien, Calhoun, Cheboygan, Eaton, Emmet, Gogebic, Houghton, Ingham, Jackson, and Sanilac counties will support over 5,427 jobs and help drivers go to work, drop their kids off at school, and run errands safely,” said Governor Whitmer. “Since I took office through the end of 2022, we will have invested 70% more in our roads than the previous four years to fix over 16,000 lane miles of road and 1,200 bridges, supporting nearly 89,000 jobs. Both the Rebuilding Michigan Plan and the bipartisan Building Michigan Together Plan are helping us build safe, reliable infrastructure that will make a huge difference for families and business across the state. Rebuilding 15 Mile Road bridge over I-94 

MDOT will rebuild the 15 Mile Road bridge over I-94 as part of the ongoing $210 million investment to rebuild I-69 between Island Highway in Charlotte, Eaton County, and I-94 in Marshall, Calhoun County. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support nearly 2,667 jobs.

Eastbound I-94 ramp to US-127/M-50 (West Avenue) closed in Jackson starting May 31  

MDOT will close the eastbound I-94 ramp to US-127/M-50 (West Avenue) in Jackson for ramp rebuilding.  

This work is part of MDOT's ongoing $120 million investment to rebuild and widen I-94 near the Airport Road interchange to just west of the east US-127/I-94 interchange in Blackman and Leoni Township. The I-94 project involves upgrading the US-127/M-50 (West Avenue)/I-94 interchange to a diverging diamond interchange, the Elm Road interchange with roundabouts, and the Lansing Avenue bridge over I-94. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support nearly 1,524 jobs

Please follow posted detours. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes
Safety benefit:	This traffic configuration will increase safety for workers and motorists through this work zone. These improvements will provide increased safety and mobility in this area of I-94, which is a significant local and national trade corridor.

I-496 Rebuilding Michigan project in Ingham County  

Work will begin on MDOT’s $80 million investment to rebuild 2 miles of I-496 in Ingham County starting Thursday, June 2. Both directions of I-496 traffic will be detoured between Lansing Road and the Grand River during this work. Activity will include rebuilding the freeway and interchange ramps, including operational improvements from the Lansing Road and M-99 (Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard) interchanges, preventive maintenance on 17 bridges, and upgrades to the service drives from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to the east. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support 1,016 jobs.

Traffic restrictions:	This work will require detouring I-496 traffic in each direction to Malcom X and St. Joseph streets, respectively, along with periodic closures of structures over I-496. Motorists should expect delays.
Safety benefit:	These improvements will provide increased safety and mobility in this area of I-496, which is a significant local and national trade corridor.

Southbound I-75 exit ramp to US-23 in Mackinaw City to close for bridge rebuilding  

The southbound I-75 exit ramp to US-23 (Exit 338) in Mackinaw City will be closed starting May 31 as contractors begin removing and replacing the ramp’s bridge beams and deck, part of a larger project this season to rebuild and repave sections of the highway. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support 155 jobs. 

MDOT is investing $12.3 million to rebuild and resurface US-23 from I-75 to east of South Huron Avenue and I-75 from Old M-108 (Exit 337 - Nicolet Street/Mackinaw Highway) to the Mackinac Bridge, as well as replace the southbound US-23 exit ramp bridge beams and deck over I-75. Much of the I-75 road work will require shoulder or single-lane closures with traffic shifts. Details on the project are available on the project website.  

US-2 Bessemer rebuilding project resumes 

MDOT, in partnership with the city of Bessemer, is investing about $9.9 million to rebuild 2.7 miles of US-2 from Powdermill Creek to east of Cedar Avenue through the city of Bessemer. The work will include reconfiguring lanes to add a center left-turn lane, storm sewer improvements, and city sanitary sewer and water main replacements. This project includes a five-year materials and workmanship pavement warranty. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to directly and indirectly support 126 jobs.

Traffic restrictions:	A one-way detour of US-2 traffic will be in place during the work. From May 31 until late August, eastbound US-2 will be detoured onto city streets. Eastbound US-2 traffic will be directed south onto Mill Street, then east on Galena Street, south on Moore Street, east on Longyear Street, north on Peck Street, and back to US-2. Clayberg Street will provide an intermediate route for traffic to circle back to westbound US-2.  From July 5 to mid-August, westbound US-2 will be detoured north onto Case Street, west onto Iron Street, south onto Mine Street, and then back to US-2.
Safety benefit:	This work will extend the lifespan of the roadway and result in a smoother driving surface and increased safety for motorists and pedestrians. Studies have shown a center left-turn lane can reduce crashes.

US-41/M-28 Baraga County project starts May 31 

MDOT is investing about $4.3 million to resurface 7.5 miles of US-41/M-28 from east of the M-28/US-141 intersection to the east end of the passing lane section near the Tioga Roadside Park in Covington Township, Baraga County. The project includes asphalt resurfacing, crushing and shaping of shoulders, drainage improvements, guardrail, new signs, and pavement markings. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support 55 jobs

M-46 resurfacing in Sanilac County 

MDOT will invest $800,000 to resurface 2.5 miles of M-46 from the west village limits of Carsonville to Goetze Road. Work includes resurfacing, joint repairs, concrete sidewalk ramp repairs, shoulder gravel, and pavement markings.

M-140 bridge repairs in Watervliet in Berrien County  

MDOT will be investing $800,000 to repair the M-140 bridge over the Paw Paw Lake Outlet near Watervliet in Berrien County. The project includes rebuilding the bridge deck and repairing the abutments and piers. Based on economic modeling, this investment is expected to support 10 jobs.

Rebuilding Michigan Plan 

Since Governor Whitmer took office, Michigan has repaired, rebuilt, or replaced 13,198 lane miles of road and 903 bridges, supporting nearly 82,000 jobs. Recently, Governor Whitmer signed the Building Michigan Together Plan, a bipartisan plan to invest nearly $5 billion in Michigan’s infrastructure, grow the economy, create jobs, and benefit families in every region of the state. The Building Michigan Together Plan calls for critical investments of $645 million in Michigan’s infrastructure, including $317 million for road and bridge programs, benefitting both state and local projects.
