Last year, on October 1st and 2nd, the third annual Handcrafted Octoberfest: A Family Harvest Celebration returned to Rhinebeck’s Dutchess County Fairgrounds. Prior to 2019, an Octoberfest had never before been hosted at the centuries-old fairgrounds, and this one has a lot more to offer than beer-guzzling and polka-dancing (although both are welcomed!). Produced by Quail Hollow Events (renowned for producing two of the top ranked juried art & crafts fairs in the nation), this open-air event honors harvest time and slips in a few Germanic traditions, but is centered around the concept of handmade. And there’s something for every generation, taste and taste bud, from the Hudson Valley’s best craft beer, wine and spirits to one-of-a-kind goods by the nation’s finest makers and artisans, to seasonal grub, live musical performances and expert-led harvest activities. “Handcrafted Octoberfest champions the craft, training and story behind each object and attraction. Featuring works of art and craft, but also gourmet specialty foods, local wine and spirits and agricultural marvels, this fest celebrates the idea of small-batch and hand-spun, with lots of harvest fun for all ages on the side,” says Ola Rubinstein, director of Quail Hollow Events. The festival offers a carefully curated collection of handmade goods in over ten media categories, complimented by a diverse selection of autumnal extras: fine art pumpkin carving by a nationally-acclaimed master of the niche craft, one of the STATE’S largest pumpkins (likely weighing in over 1,700 pounds), an educational petting zoo and animal show, family lawn games, carriage rides, craft demonstrations (fiber-spinning, woodworking and more), a drop-off children’s craft tent (with programming and creative free play), and ongoing live music.
