Dr. Elwood Robinson To Speak At HPU’s Annual MLK Day Worship Service

High Point University will host special guest Dr. Elwood Robinson as the keynote speaker for the university’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Worship Service. It will be held on Monday, Jan. 16 at 11 a.m. in the Hayworth Chapel on campus. The service is open to the public; tickets are not required.

Robinson is the chancellor of Winston-Salem State University, serving in this role since 2015. He has also served as the founding dean of the NCCU College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and as provost and vice president of Cambridge College.

“We are blessed to have Dr. Robinson speak at our annual MLK Jr. Worship Service,” says HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein. “His accolades, experience and encouragement to be servant leaders will enrich all who hear him speak on Dr. King’s legacy.”

Robinson has written more than 400 scientific publications and presentations, including his short story, titled “Wednesdays and Sundays,” featured in the book “Keeping the Faith: Stories of Love, Courage, Healing and Hope from Black America.” This book won the 2003 NAACP Image Award for Most Outstanding Literary Work, Nonfiction. Robinson has presented his work globally at seminars and workshops in China, Egypt, South Africa and the United States.

A native of Ivanhoe, North Carolina, Robinson graduated magna *** laude from North Carolina Central University in 1978. He then went on to earn a master’s degree before completing a pre-doctoral internship, as well as completing his doctorate in clinical psychology.

“It is a true honor and a gift to have a leader such as Dr. Robinson lead us in remembering the spiritual legacy of Dr. King,” says Rev. Dr. Preston Davis, minister to the university. “His commitment to forming young people to be stewards of life and love will inspire all who gather for worship.”

Music at the service will be led by Genesis Gospel Choir and guest musicians. Each year, this worship service serves to awaken the faithful witness of Dr. King for our lives here and now.

In addition to HPU’s Annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Worship Service, HPU will host a day of service as “A Day On, Not Off” on Jan. 16 by organizing various service projects throughout campus and the community. Service projects include packing thousands of seeds for the community, packing kits for veterans, cleaning up local organizations and more
