Schools and Libraries

June 21, 2022

From: High Point University

Who: More than 150 elementary students at the Point Prep and Leadership Academy, High Point University faculty and graduate students in the Stout School of Education. Media are invited to attend.

What: STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) Camp. This year’s theme is Get Your STEM Career On!

When: Tuesday, June 21- Saturday, June 25, 2022

Where: The Point Prep and Leadership Academy 5700 Riverdale Drive, Jamestown, North Carolina

Why: High Point University’s annual STEM camp returns this summer to provide local children with a unique STEM experience. Students from The Point Prep and Leadership Academy will have a full week of learning in science, technology, engineering and math.

The theme this year is “Get Your STEM Career On!” Students will build something new each day, leading up to the last day with an exciting rocket launch. HPU education majors are ready to welcome students for a week of robotics and engineering design.

“STEM is not just about medicine, engineering and computers, it is a mindset for problem solving,” says Dr. Shirley Disseler, associate professor in HPU’s Stout School of Education and STEM coordinator. “Kids today, more than ever, need to understand how to problem solve because of the ever-changing world into which they were born. Being exposed to various career paths in STEM at an early age will provide a mindset for learners as they mature and learn.”

On Tuesday, June 21 at 10 a.m., HPU faculty, students and the elementary kids will launch 150 finger flyers in the gym to kick off camp. The Finger Flyer Educational STEM Kits are a product that HPU student Erin Morrow created. Morrow won first place for her company at the 11th annual Business Plan Competition in 2021. Each drone STEM kit provides a step-by-step assembly guide, explains the flight principles and underlying physics, and describes the drone technology that makes it all possible.

This year’s STEM camp will conclude on Saturday, June 25, at 9 a.m. with the rocket launch. The campers will launch the rockets they worked on during the week at this event.
