Schools and Libraries

August 18, 2022

From: High Point University

Who: High Point University upperclassmen, faculty and staff will welcome new and returning students this weekend. The weekend includes two milestones for HPU. The university will welcome the largest group of new students in history at 1,600 and the largest total enrollment in history at 6,000.

What: HPU Move-In Day and Welcome Week

When: Friday, Aug. 19 through Sunday, Aug. 21. See below for a full list of activities.

Where: Various locations across campus.

Why: Move-In Days and Welcome Week are filled with activities that allow students to transition to an academic environment. Hundreds of HPU faculty, staff and upperclassmen volunteers will be on-site to assist new students and provide a smooth move-in process throughout the weekend.

HPU expects to welcome more than 20,000 people on campus and around the community this weekend. Local restaurants, hotels and shops experience an economic boost in business every Move-In Weekend.

“Move-In weekend is an impactful boost to our local economy as a record-breaking 20,000 visitors generate an estimated $5.15 million of economic impact in our city and surrounding communities,” says Melody Burnett, president of Visit High Point. “Our area businesses are rejoicing in this homecoming as HPU students and families are valued customers.”
Schedule of activities:

Friday – Early decision students will move into their residence halls from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. HPU faculty, staff and upperclassmen will help unload cars and move items into their rooms.

Saturday – All other students move in on Aug. 20, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. across campus. From 6 p.m. to 7 p.m., new students will meet their Peer Mentor during the Mix with Your Mentor event at various locations on campus. The Peer Mentor program is designed to make the transition to HPU seamless.

Sunday – At 9 a.m., the Opening Convocation will take place in the newly opened Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena and Conference Center. HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein will deliver the keynote address. A bald eagle will soar across the new students to symbolize the ideals of free enterprise, independence and the ability to pursue new opportunities in the United States. The same bald eagle will soar over the class during their graduation in four years.

At 1:30 p.m., new students will sign the HPU Honor Code during a special session in Millis Athletic and Convocation Center titled “Academics and Honesty: The High Point University Honor Code Initiation.”

About HPU’s Class of 2026:

The Class of 2026 represents 44 states, with New Jersey and New York the most represented outside of North Carolina. This year’s new students have completed more than 90,000 community service hours, 49 students are joining their siblings on campus and 20% of the class are first generation college students.

Media Parking: Media are asked to enter campus off of University Parkway onto Boundary Avenue. You will be directed to park in Lot B where someone from the Office of Communication will meet you in a golf cart.
