HPU Welcomes Global Leader to Access to Innovators Program

HIGH POINT, N.C., Oct. 10, 2022 – High Point University’s list of global leaders in the Access to Innovators program is continually growing. HPU welcomes Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), as HPU’s Human Capital Expert in Residence.

Taylor leads one of the world’s largest HR trade associations, impacting the lives of 115 million workers every day in 165 countries. His career spans more than 20 years as a lawyer, human resources executive and CEO for both nonprofit and for-profit spaces.

“HPU is grateful to have Mr. Taylor mentoring our students with his experience in the human resources field,” says HPU President Dr. Nido Qubein. “His business expertise as a CEO and real-world experience will benefit our students tremendously.”

Taylor joins a long list of global leaders who serve in residence at HPU. The program at HPU connects students with industry leaders for networking and mentorship opportunities. He joins Apple Co-Founder Steve Wozniak, HPU’s Innovator in Residence; Netflix Co-Founder Marc Randolph, HPU’s Entrepreneur in Residence; Dallas Mavericks CEO Cynt Marshall, HPU’s Sports Executive in Residence; Domino’s CEO Russell Weiner, HPU’s Corporate Executive in Residence; Former U.S. Ambassador and FCC Chairman William “Bill” Kennard, HPU’s Global Leader in Residence; Former CEO of Tufts Medical Center Dr. Ellen Zane, HPU’s Health Care Executive in Residence; ABC News’ “Nightline” Anchor Byron Pitts, HPU’s Journalist in Residence; American Actor, Producer and Television Presenter Dean Cain, HPU’s Actor in Residence; and many others.

“I am excited to be part of HPU’s growing Access to Innovators program as the Human Capital Expert in Residence,” says Taylor. “I’m thankful to have this opportunity to mentor a variety of students and help them as they look to their future careers.”

Before leading the SHRM, Taylor held senior and chief executive roles at IAC/Interactive Corp, Paramount Pictures, Blockbuster Entertainment Group and more. Most recently, he was president and CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund. Taylor is a bestselling author for his book “RESET: A Leader’s Guide to Work in an Age of Upheaval,” which presents strategies to reimagine company culture and to make the necessary foundational reset of all things work.

Throughout Taylor’s career, he has won several awards, including the Distinguished Executive of the Year Award in 2020 from the Academy of Management and named 2021 ALA Professional Society CEO of the Year by “CEO Update.” He was also appointed chairman of the President’s Advisory Board on Historically Black Colleges and Universities and is a member of the corporate boards of Guild Education, iCIMS and XPO Logistics.

Taylor is a Fellow of the National Academy of Human Resources and is licensed to practice law in Florida, Illinois and Washington, D.C. When he’s not at work, Taylor writes the weekly USA Today column, “Ask HR,” and occasionally testifies before congress on critical workforce issues.
