Land and Sea: Abstracts of the Imagination

We had a blast at the opening reception for Land and Sea: Abstracts of the Imagination presented by the River Valley Artists Collective! River Valley Artists is a loosely formed group of artists hailing from the tri-town region of Essex, Chester, and Deep River.

This show consists of abstract landscapes executed by 16 of their 60 talented artists, some of whom have had the pleasure of showing at the Hygienic in the past. All of the members live in the Connecticut River Valley, a place surrounded by forests, fields, the Connecticut River, and beaches on Long Island Sound. Those same elements are the inspiration for their body of work.

Thank you to everyone who showed their support and purchased art! #BuyArtSupportArtists #SupportLocalArtists

Exhibition is on display until Saturday, June 17th, 2023

An Evening with Author
Jasmin Iolani Hakes

Join us on Friday, June 16th from 5-6 PM for a book talk with Hawaiian native and Author, Jasmin Iolani Hakes at the Hygienic Art Gallery. She will read sections from her new debut novel, "HULA" published by Harper Collins.

ABOUT THE BOOK:

The voice and passion of a community often forgotten powers "HULA," Jasmin ‘Iolani Hakes fierce and heartfelt debut novel. Sharing truths rarely spoken about beyond the small, fading native population of the Islands, Hakes weaves the stories of three generations of women in a family where the iconic dance of the title is far more than a tourist entertainment — imbued with the power of the past and a fading hope for preserving a future. Hawaii was most recently in the news for the Mauna Loa eruption and its dazzling lava displays, but it is always in the American consciousness as a top travel destination, more so now with a record high post-covid tourism explosion, yielding new efforts by the Hawaii Tourism Authority to establish Destination Management Action Plans that emphasize educating visitors, addressing overcrowded attractions and improving cultural assets. Jasmin’s novel will play a key role in these efforts.
