From: Kansas Governor Laura Kelly

KEY QUOTE: "These are tax cuts we fully support. In the case of the sales tax on groceries, this newspaper has been on record for decades as supporting its elimination."

Governor talking tax cuts

  • Governor Laura Kelly started stumping Thursday for what she calls an ‘Axing Your Taxes’ package introduced in the Kansas House and Senate. It’s three parts, and there is a really good chance there is something in that package for you.
  • The governor is stumping for complete elimination of the sales tax on food – now. Not a couple years down the road, but now.
  • SB 57 and HB 2111 wants to go further – full elimination of state sales tax on groceries, diapers, and feminine hygiene products. The state sales tax on groceries is currently 4.5 percent, on the other products 6.5. You will feel that.
  • And there’s more. SB 55 and HB 2108 seeks to create a back-to-school sales tax holiday. The idea is a four-day sales tax holiday on school supplies, personal computers, instructional materials, and art supplies every August. School-bound families will feel that. School supplies are not cheap.
  • Those two proposals will benefit the “little guy.” Neither sounds like much, but it will put a little more cash back in a lot of pockets.
