Mark your calendars for KALA 50 - Kala’s art auction exhibition, benefit, and 50th anniversary party!
KALA 50, brings together Kala’s creative community and features the inventive and meaningful art being made right here in the Bay Area. We are thrilled this year to be joined by honorary auction chairs Squeak Carnwath and Richard Nagler and to be celebrating David Huffman, Emily Payne, and Rupy C. Tut as the 2024 honored artists.
We added a new IG account @kalagallery_berkeley to follow for auction highlights and to see work from Kala’s gallery and art sales program.
KALA 50 kicks off with a free, family friendly Preview Party, Thursday, March 21, 6-9 pm.
Tickets are on sale now for the big 5-0 party, live auction, silent auction closing, and short program on Saturday, April 27, 6-9pm.Purchase a patron membership for $300 and receive two tickets to the auction festivities. Individual, VIP, and Artist tickets are available too.

Fellowship Call for Entry & Open Project Spaces
Two weeks left to apply! Artists producing innovative work in and across printmaking, photography, book arts, film/video, sound, animation, performance cinema, media arts, and installation are eligible to apply. Fellows receive a $3,000 stipend, 24/7 access to Kala's studios for one to nine months, one month of free housing for artists coming from outside of the Bay Area, a free art class or workshop, and a culminating exhibition as a cohort in the Kala gallery. Each year Kala provides fellowships to six artists from around the world working in a variety of disciplines. Kala Gallery is excited to present Creating Together, an exhibition highlighting our education programs.
For over 35 years, Kala’s arts education programs have been at the heart of our work. As a community-oriented organization, Kala is passionate about offering quality arts education for children, youth, and adults. The exhibition Creating Together highlights Kala's collaboration with The Arts and Humanities Academy (AHA) as well as arts education programs at Kala including Artists-in-Schools (AIS), Teen Studio, After School Studio, Camp Kala, and Adult Art Classes. Join us to celebrate the amazing artwork created by artists and students of all ages and artistic experiences, including Kala teaching artists.

New Spring Teen Studio Programs
Teen Studio: Sculpture - 3D Exploration
Thursdays, March 7-28, 4-6pm
Instructor: Ali Vaughan
Location: Kala Gallery & Classroom
In this sculpture class intensive, students will be introduced to the principles of modern sculpture and engage in plenty of 3-dimensional exploration and play. We will investigate the way that different materials can lead to different ideas, how balance and gravity affect form, and how sculpture can become a collaborative act, among other lessons. By the end of the class, students will have an understanding of the landscape of modern sculpture and the confidence and imagination to continue exploring in 3D.
Teen Studio: Quilting and Spray Painting
Saturdays, March 9-30, 12:30-3:30pm
Instructor: Corduroy Joan
Location: Kala Gallery & Classroom
In this intensive workshop, we will ask how quilts can be seen as books. Using inspiration from The Embodied Press (recent exhibition at Kala), graphic novels, old quilts, and our own lives, we will design and create quilts using fabric spray paint and stencils. We will finish these personal quilts over three sessions. Join us at Kala and create dynamic works of art while diving into the creative process!

During this 9-week course, we will focus on drawing as a form of design and imagination. Teens will learn how to use drawing skills to draw things that they cannot see or observe in the world around them, but rather that come from their own imaginations and ideas. Students will practice prompts and tasks that encourage them to generate new and creative ideas and learn about drawing as the most immediate way to capture an idea as it appears. All levels are welcome.

Adult Art Classes Highlights
Intro to Monotype Printing: 3 Colors, 3 Shapes, 3 Layers
Sunday, March 3, 10am-3pm
Instructor: Liz Schiff
Location: Kala Community Classroom
This introductory workshop covers the basic steps of how to make multi-layered monotypes using a printing press. Using a simple 3 x 3 x 3 format: three shapes, three colors, and three layers, students will build up the layers of color over the stenciled shapes. No previous printmaking experience necessary.
Saturdays, March 9-30, 10am-3pm
Instructor: Ryan Harrison
Location: Kala Printmaking Studio
In this introductory class we will cover all aspects of the screenprinting process. Students will bring imagery they wish to print, and will create an edition of single color prints, as well as an edition of prints utilizing 2-4 colors. Students will learn about film and stencil setup, screen exposure, press setup and registration, ink mixing, and printing techniques. No printmaking or screenprinting experience required.

Procreate is an intuitive digital illustration app for the iPad that is great for quick sketching as well as for producing finished digital artworks. Students will start drawing immediately with the basic tools before moving on to explore the surprisingly large number of features in Procreate, from layers and masks to transformations and simple animation. Bring your iPad and your ideas, and we’ll explore how you can make them happen. All are welcome!

Batik Dyeing: From Wax to Color
Saturday, March 16, 10am-1pm
Instructor: Vyjayanthi (YJ) Malladi
Location: Kala Community Classroom
This one-day introductory workshop will cover the A to Z of Batik – a method of hand painting fabric using wax as a resist – in just a few hours. Participants will be designing patterns, transferring the designs to fabric, applying wax, and hand painting the final piece to take home. This workshop is perfect for artists and enthusiasts who want to understand the nuances of an ancient craft and apply it to various cloth-based pieces of their choice. All levels welcome.
