What's New in the Neighborhood

Opening reception in front of the mural on Sunday, Sept 10, 4-6pm!

There’s a new mural across the street from the Kala Heinz Avenue studios! The Rama Mural was painted by Berkeley artist and beloved Kala board member Amrita Singhal and is based on a painting in the collection of the Berkeley Art Museum. The imagery is inspired by a historical meditation tradition in India in which the word ‘Rama’ is written repeatedly; it represents goodness, decency and courage. Amrita experienced the mesmerizing nature of this meditation as a child, from her grandmother, who practiced it daily, usually from 4 to 5 am.

The mural is made possible through the generosity of the Berkeley Art Works Projects (BAWP) and Meyer Sound. Special thanks also to Gary Nakamoto!

On View: Dig and Rise

On view in the Kala gallery until September 22nd:

Dig and Rise featuring new works by 2022-2023 Kala Fellowship and Media Residency artists: Lani AsunciónMeghana BisineerPaola de la CalleRayelle Janell GardnerSungjae LeeJessica Doe (née Mehta, Tyner)Nasim MoghadamKhadijah MorleyRosa ParkSass Popoli (2021-2022 Fellow), and Trina Michelle Robinson.

Dig and Rise celebrates diverse voices and research, with a focus on resilience and hope that each artist in the exhibition carries and amplifies through their projects. While thinking about the work and title of the exhibition, many powerful poets and musicians came to mind. Still I Rise by Maya Angelou, A Center by Ha Jin and music by Miles Davis are just a few examples of work that empowers audiences through creativity, message, passion and resilience. Art – poetry, music, writing, visual art, moving images, and in many other formats – can create significant ripple effects calling attention to important issues and inviting audiences to take action.
