Closing Reception: Friday, March 17, 4pm-7pm
Join us for the closing reception on Friday, March 17, 4-7pm for Fossil of Language, a retrospective featuring works by Yuzo Nakano, Artistic Director Emeritus and Co-founder of Kala Art Institute.
Nakano’s life itself is a journey of art. In his statement he describes his experience of traveling the world in the late 1960s and the impact that had on creating an international artist community right here in Berkeley in the early 1970s - Kala. He has had a profound influence on future generations of artists and artist communities.
The exhibition is on view through March 17. If you cannot make it to the closing reception, the gallery is also open Tue - Fri, 12-5pm leading up to the closing reception. Come visit us!
Kala Fellowship Application Due March 15th
One week countdown - Kala's Fellowship Program - apply via slideroom! The application deadline is March 15th. Learn more about this opportunity here and start your application today. Artists receive $3,000, a one to nine-month artist residency with 24/7 access to Kala's facilities, one-month housing at the Higby (across the street from Kala) for artists from outside the Bay Area, a free class, and a culminating group exhibition in the Kala Gallery.
New this year and with support from an individual donor, one of the six spots is designated for a veteran artist (who has served in the US armed forces). If you are eligible for this opportunity, please note your interest in Question 14 on the slideroom application.
In addition, in partnership with the Sustainable Arts Foundation, we also have support for parent artists. One of our six fellowships is designated for a parent artist (with a child under 18 at home). We also have several additional parent artist residencies (more info under Special Programs). If you are eligible, please note your interest on Question 13.

Community Figure Drawing Session
Date & Time: March 20, 6pm-9pm
Location: Kala Community Classroom
Cost: $20-35, sliding scale
Come draw with us in the Kala gallery space! We will have a model for the full 3 hours during which participants can practice their figure drawing at their own pace, work on incorporating a figure into an existing piece, or however they’d like to use their time! Kala staff members – who are also practicing artists – will facilitate the session and offer any desired feedback or support.

Compass Drawing: Topophilia & A Sense of Place

Join this 5-week drawing course to explore the concept of topophilia (strong sense of place) and how we relate to land, place, and space through various techniques with an interdisciplinary approach. Students collaborate on a collective map, collaging together their individual art pieces and findings that they gather throughout the course.
