Artist-in-Residence Application Deadline - October 15, 2022
Join Kala's creative community and apply to become an artist-in-residence (AIR)! Applications are due via slideroom on October 15th. Kala's AIR program is a highly subsidized fee-based artist residency that provides 24-hour access to Kala's printshop, digital lab, black and white darkroom, and project spaces as available. Resident artists have 24/7 access to shared printmaking and digital lab, individual storage space including a flat file and cubby, and opportunities to participate in Kala exhibitions. We have limited housing available (a 2-bedroom unit across the street from Kala) for artists coming from outside of Northern California.
Artists' Annual Exhibition
Exhibition Open: October 20, 2022 - January 13, 2023
Opening reception: Thursday, October 20, 6-8pm
Kala Gallery
Fresh work in a variety of media by Kala’s community of artists. The exhibition reflects the diverse Kala community with an exhibition of prints, photographs, paintings, drawings, videos, mixed media works, and sculpture.
Kala's exhibitions are supported, in part, by the Zellerbach Family Foundation.
Community Workshop: Day of the Dead/ Día de Muertos
Date & Time: October 29, 2022, 11am - 2pm
Location: Kala Community Classroom
Instructors: Teaching Artist Natalie Palms and Kala staff
Join us for a Community Workshop: Day of the Dead/ Día de Muertos to celebrate and honor our loved ones who have passed away and are no longer with us (ancestor, family, friend, celebrity or even a beloved pet). We will provide a variety of materials and templates of Day of the Dead symbols and images which you can use to create meaningful and colorful creations. Create a decorative hojalata (tin art) embossed piece or picture frame to include in an ofrenda/altar, or bring your own symbols or personal images of a loved one to include in an accordion book art activity.
Teen Studio Program
Saturdays, October 29 - November 12, 1pm - 4pm
In this three-part class, participants will be introduced to the fascinating history and multifaceted applications of studio photography.
