For the month of January, the Kingston Public Library will feature an exhibit of abstract art by Plymouth artist Stephanie Leonard on display in our art gallery. 

Originally from Connecticut, Leonard moved to Duxbury as a child and currently resides in Plymouth.  After providing various forms of care as a nurse, she followed her own prescription for expression by returning to art. Leonard uses the medium of watercolor, which can be both concrete and ephemeral, to create beautiful sea view and marine images. 

"I have always been a creative person," notes Leonard. "Before becoming an artist, I sewed all types of clothing, including bridesmaid dresses, leather coats, fleece jackets, and quilts. I loved choosing fabrics and re-inventing patterns." 

Leonard had a life change at age 40, as she began to take watercolor classes. She studied with several local artists, most notably Nancy Howell in Scituate. 

"I love translucency, and contrasting lights and darks," said Leonard. "I've been called a 'colorist.' I especially love seascapes, rocks, and buildings. Painting has brought me so much joy and has inspired me to get through life's challenges." 

The exhibit will be on view in the Library's gallery throughout January. The Kingston Public Library is open Mondays, Fridays, and Saturdays 10 to 5 p.m. and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays 10-8 p.m.
