Schubert wrote two glorious piano trios. They are gorgeous and demanding and we have the best artists to bring them to you. Pianist and Artistic Director Wu Han is joined by Philip Setzer and David Finckel, both past members of the famed Emerson String Quartet, in this not-to-be-missed performance.

The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center brings us a celebration of potential. Beethoven, Rossini, and Britten highlight the possibilities for their ensembles. Here’s a classically elegant program with spice. Mozart’s own arrangement of his Piano Concerto is masterful and mysterious. For contrast, Kodály’s Serenade expresses Hungarian folk tunes with fiery execution. Arensky’s children’s songs sighs with innocence, before we end on his dark-hued and rarely performed Cello Quartet.

Personal tributes and private storms make up our final program. Listen to the Slavic soul in Dvo?ák and the Bulgarian dances. Lukas Foss’s Capriccio is six minutes of ultimate instrumental virtuosity. Smetana’s Piano Trio is his heart-wrenching response to the death of his young daughter. We end with Schumann’s Piano Quintet, his acknowledgement of his wife Clara’s virtuosity and concert career. It’s a buoyant, joyful, and essential work.
