Get ready for immersion in pure delight, starting with Haydn’s vivacious Piano Trio. Mendelssohn’s Piano Quartet? Let’s just call it what it is: a tour de force. The exhilarating finish is Brahms’s magisterial Sextet for Strings: celebratory, happy, so much fun for audiences and players alike.

Saturday, April 13, 5:00 p.m. / Pre-Concert Talk at 4:15 p.m.*

MOZART, KODALY, & ARENSKY

Mozart Piano Concerto no. 12 in A major, K. 414

Julian Rhee, James Thompson, Danbi Um, violins; Paul Neubauer, viola; Nicholas Canellakis, David Finckel, cellos; Michael Stephen Brown, Wu Han, pianos

Here’s a classically elegant program with spice. Mozart’s own arrangement of his Piano Concerto is masterful and mysterious. For contrast, Kodály’s Serenade expresses Hungarian folk tunes with fiery execution. Arensky’s children’s songs sighs with innocence, before we end on his dark-hued and rarely performed Cello Quartet.

Tuesday, April 16, 7:30 p.m. / Pre-Concert Talk at 6:45 p.m.

Personal tributes and private storms make up our final program. Listen to the Slavic soul in Dvo?ák and the Bulgarian dances. Lukas Foss’s Capriccio is six minutes of ultimate instrumental virtuosity. Smetana’s Piano Trio is his heart-wrenching response to the death of his young daughter. We end with Schumann’s Piano Quintet, his acknowledgement of his wife Clara’s virtuosity and concert career. It’s a buoyant, joyful, and essential work.
