Government and Politics

December 5, 2022

From: City Of Naperville

The lottery to determine the ballot order of Mayor and City Council candidates who simultaneously filed petitions to run in the 2023 Naperville municipal election will take place at noon, Tuesday, Dec. 6, in the City Council Chambers of the Naperville Municipal Center, 400 S. Eagle St. The lottery is open to the public and candidates are not required to attend.

The order of filing determines the position of a candidate's name on the ballot. Petitions are considered simultaneously filed when the Community Services Department receives them at 8 a.m. on the first day of the filing period or between 4 and 5 p.m. on the final day. The names of all candidates who filed at 8 a.m. Monday, Nov. 21, will be placed into a lottery to determine who will appear first on the ballot. The names of all candidates who submitted petitions between 4 and 5 p.m. Monday, Nov. 28, will be entered into a separate lottery to determine who will appear last on the ballot. Any petitions submitted after 8 a.m. on Nov. 21 and before 4 p.m. on Nov. 28 will appear in the order in which they were received.

The state of Illinois requires the local election authority to conduct a lottery within nine days after the last day of the petition filing period.
