ConEd Family Day

Design Your Own Hand-Held Fan!
Activity Kit Pick Up

Saturday, August 13, 2022
1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Stay cool this summer like they did in the past by designing your own hand-held fan! Before air-conditioning was invented, people kept themselves cool by using hand-held fans. These fans could be simple or elaborate, and people could even send messages to one another by holding their fans in different positions. Learn more about the secret language of fans and make your own unique fans with this month’s Family Day activity kit!

Pick-Up Details: Activity kits containing instructions and materials will be available between 1-3 PM on Saturday, August 13th. If you are interested in picking up a kit, please come to the basement entrance on the right-hand side of the building and knock on the door. Kits are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Safety Requirements: Masks are required for participants over the age of two when social distancing is not possible. Your health and safety are our top priorities. Please be assured that the museum will follow guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), New York State, and New York City for increased health and safety procedures. By completing our registration process, you agree to abide by our visitor guidelines and procedures, which serve to keep our museum community safe.

Presented as part of our monthly ConEdison Family Day program.

For three decades, Marjorie Eliot and Parlor Entertainment have honored the past and celebrated the present with this event, which has become a cherished local tradition. This outdoor event is free and open to the public. This event has a limited capacity, and it is recommended that you arrive early to obtain a seat. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be cancelled.

Health and Safety Guidelines:Attendees who need to enter the Mansion to use restroom facilities will be required to wear a mask.

We are honored to partner again with our neighbor, Marjorie Eliot for the 30th presentation of this special, intimate event. Our location, across the street from historic apartment building 555 Edgecombe Avenue, (also known as the “Triple Nickel”) is particularly appropriate for a celebration of music. 555 Edgecombe was home to artists like Count Basie, singer and actor Paul Robeson, vocalists Cassandra Wilson and Tulani Kinard (Sweet Honey in the Rock), and today is the site of Ms. Eliot’s weekly Sunday Parlor Jazz sessions.

Exhibition On-View

At Ease - Photographs by
Military Veterans in New York

Through September 11, 2022

Learning to photograph, says U.S. Army veteran Anny Mariano, provides “the constant reminder that there is beauty and art all around me, even in the darkest of times.” Mariano and 21 other veterans who participated in workshops with the Josephine Herrick Project from 2018 - 2022 showcase their work in At Ease: Photographs by Military Veterans in New York. For the photographers, the camera became a way of finding new avenues of self-expression and to relate to the world around them. Filtered through their experiences and seen through their lenses, New York—even at its most frenetic—becomes a place of peace.

This exhibition is on-view at the Morris-Jumel Mansion from June 16 through September 11, 2022.
