The Barber of Seville

ROSSINI'S COMIC OPERA

The centerpiece of this year's Festival is Gioachino Rossini's brilliant opera buffa in two acts with an Italian libretto by Cesare Sterbini. The libretto is based on Pierre Beaumarchais's French comedy The Barber of Seville. The opera is a comic masterpiece and a popular work in the opera repertoire. This new production with cubist set design offers a refreshing take on the classic tale featuring one of opera's iconic characters – Figaro.

VOCAL RECITAL

Called “a voice for this historic moment” (Washington Post), 2023 Grammy Award-winning baritone Will Liverman is the recipient of the 2022 Beverly Sills Artist Award by The Metropolitan Opera. He opened the Met’s 2021-22 season in a celebrated “breakout performance” (New York Times) as Charles in Terence Blanchard’s Fire Shut Up in My Bones. Following Fire’s success, the Met announced that Liverman will star in Anthony Davis’ X: The Life and Times of Malcolm X, which will be the second opera by a Black composer in the company’s history, premiering in the fall of 2023.

Andrew Lippa's musical theatre oratorio is an emotional celebration of an American icon. It weaves the story of Harvey Milk’s life – from boyhood to his rise as the first openly gay man to hold public office in California to his assassination. It's part choral work and part theater piece.
