Round Up: Kari Lake Wants You To Forget She Supported Arizona's Near - Total Abortion Ban

Government and Politics

April 11, 2024

ARIZONA -–  Kari Lake can’t outrun her dangerous anti-abortion record that includes the 1864 ban on abortion without exceptions for rape or incest.

Kari Lake has a “clear record on” abortion –  endorsing the “draconian” 1864 abortion ban on multiple occasions. Her campaign is even lying about her support for the ban on abortion to try to cover it up.

Arizonans won’t “buy Kari Lake’s fake concern over an Arizona Supreme Court abortion ruling.”

Watch:

- CNN: “It wasn’t that long ago that [Kari Lake] said this about the very law that is set to go into effect: ‘We have a great law on the books right now. If that happens, we will be a state where we will not be taking the lives of our unborn anymore….”

- CNN: “ Listen, I mean, we should point out that Kari Lake in 2022 praised this law. The 1864 law and said you know, it could be a model for other states.”

- MSNBC: “Kari Lake who called the 1864 abortion ban great when she was running for governor two years ago.”

- MSNBC: “I appreciate Yamiche talking through what Republicans have been trying to contort themselves into not being to blame for this, but there’s no way for them to distance themselves from this reality because they have cleared the way for it to happen. I look at Arizona Republicans like Kari Lake who just in 2022 said, ‘oh, I’m thrilled by this 1864 law. it’s a great law…’”

- MSNBC:  “I think Kari Lake somehow finds herself being the character that is going to be looked at across all 50 states here because Kari Lake is somebody who back in 2022 right, was looking at the hypothetical of Roe v. Wade being overturned, those comments just a couple months prior to that Dobbs decision when she called that territorial ban a great law…”

- MSNBC: “Just two years ago she endorsed the 1864 law. ‘We have a great law on the books right now. If that happens we will be a state where we will not be taking the lives of our unborn anymore.’ …. All right. Kari Lake does not oppose it and that’s something she made clear two years ago.”

- Rolling Stone: Kari Lake Claims She Opposes Arizona Abortion Ban She Once Called ‘Great.’  “MAGA Senate candidate Kari Lake once called an archaic Arizona law that bans abortion in the state a ‘great’ law that she would be “incredibly thrilled” to have it go into effect.  Well on Tuesday it did…”

- HuffPost: Kari Lake Wants You To Forget She Supported Arizona’s Near-Total Abortion Ban. “But in February 2022, when Lake appeared at a candidate forum while running for governor, her thoughts on the near-total ban were much different. ‘We have a great law on the books right now,’ Lake said of the old law, which had become unenforceable under Roe v. Wade. A month later, Arizona passed a 15-week ban in anticipation of the Supreme Court’s decision ultimately overturning abortion protections. If Roe v. Wade was struck down, Lake said at the time, “we will be a state where we will not be taking the lives of our unborn anymore.’”

- Mother Jones: Kari Lake Claims She Opposes Arizona’s Near-Total Abortion Ban—The Same One She Cheered Two Years Ago.  Two years ago on the gubernatorial campaign trail, Lake eagerly praised the 1864 law, which if enforced would make nearly all abortions in the state illegal and potentially criminalize healthcare providers with up to five years in prison.

- Talking Points Memo: Full Panic Mode Kari Lake. “So let’s review. Lake opposes the law she had consistently said she supported. She denounces the court decision which ruled that the old law is in effect. She thinks the decision should be left to the states. She also opposes abortion. Also, Arizona is a state.”

- Arizona Republic Opinion: Abortion Ruling Is A Full-On Disaster For Arizona Republicans.

- Arizona Republic Opinion: Don’t Buy Kari Lake’s Fake Concern Over An Arizona Supreme Court Abortion Ruling.

- KJZZ: “But Lake backed the law while on the campaign trail for governor of Arizona in 2022. In one interview, she identified the pre-statehood law by number, and said she was “thrilled that we are going to have a great law that’s already on the books” in the event the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. “

- The Hill: “Lake, who has in the past called the 1864 law ‘great’ and showed support for strict abortion bans…”

- New York Times: “But Ms. Lake, an ally of former President Donald J. Trump and a 2020 election denier, had voiced enthusiastic support for the law less than two years ago, when she was in the midst of a scorched-earth campaign for the Republican nomination for governor. Asked then what she thought of the ban, she said she was thrilled it existed and called a ‘great law.’”

- Business Insider: “In June of that year, Lake said in a local radio interview that she supported the 1864 law, according to Politifact.”
