Miami, FL -- On Wednesday, August 17th, Senator Annette Taddeo, joined by 37 Democrat Florida Legislators, urged the Biden administration to renew and redesignate TPS for Nicaraguans. Since taking power, the Ortega-Murillo regime has destabilized the country by trampling civil liberties, eroding democratic norms, utilizing violent tactics to silence dissent, and becoming the second-poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere.

With more than 45% of current Nicaraguan beneficiaries of TPS residing in Florida and the deep-rooted ties between the Nicaraguan community and the State of Florida, these members of the Florida legislature, urge the Biden Administration to renew and redesignate TPS for Nicaraguans in order to match the realities of the violent socio-political and tumultuous economic juncture their country faces. Now more than ever, the United States must stand tall against authoritarian regimes and support lovers of freedom and democracy.

Senator Taddeo provided the following statement: “In the face of the ruthless Ortega/Murillo dictatorship in Nicaragua, we urge the Biden administration to renew and redesignate TPS for Nicaraguans. The recent arrest of religious leaders and the latest censorship of 7 radio stations in a series of political arrests & detentions should be strongly condemned. That’s why I also have called on the Biden Administration to further use its existing authority under the RENACER Act to hold the Ortega/Murillo regime accountable and to mobilize our global allies to take coordinated actions to stop the democratic backsliding and human rights violations in Nicaragua.”
