BRIDGES Invoices and Libby App

Just before the holiday weekend, this news came along. Invoices for FY2023 Bridges members should now be available in your Marketplace account—if it’s not there yet, it should be soon.  Just log into your Marketplace account and check under the Billing menu.  For new directors or staff who are unsure of their Marketplace account, simply contact your Library Resource Tech for your District, they will be happy to help.

This additional BRIDGES news was shared in the same bulletin in late June and concerns the Libby App.  Starting the week of July 25, this message will appear to your patrons using the OverDrive App: “In early 2023, the OverDrive App will be discontinued. Upgrade to Libby today!”  Later this year, this in-app message will be updated to remind users about this change.  So the BRIDGES team has pulled together the following resources to help your library staff and users make this transition:

For Library Staff

Bookmark this Resource Center page for helpful FAQs, a preparation checklist, and staff training materials.

 For Library Users

In-app messaging will link users to this overview page for more information, FAQs, and helpful video tutorials.

How-to videos on Libby Help walk users through how to use the app.

Beginning in August, your users can sign up for virtual training sessions hosted by team OverDrive.

While Amazon has not yet accepted our submission of the Libby app to the Amazon Appstore, Kindle Fire users can now download the app onto their device manually. These steps are also linked at  https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby.

ILA Conference Scholarships

To the Annual Fall Conference

The Iowa Library Association annual fall conference is still some months away—October 12-14 in Coralville.  But it’s not too early to plan to attend.  And to help make attendance more affordable, the timing is just right to apply for a conference scholarship.

Thanks to the Susan Lerdal Memorial and also to Biblionix/Apollo, the Iowa Library Association Foundation will be offering six $250 scholarships to help ILA members attend the conference this October. The application is due by August 26.  At this writing, the application form is not yet linked to ILA's website, but will be soon. In the meantime, contact Sarah Clendineng for a PDF copy of the form.

The theme for the ILA 2022 Conference is "It’s All Connected."  The conference venue is the Hyatt Regency Coralville Hotel & Conference Center at 300 East 9th Street (formerly the Coralville Marriot & Conference Center) Discounted conference room reservations are available at the conference venue by phone at 319-688-4028 until September 20.  If calling, you will need to specify the Iowa Library Association 2022 Annual Conference when making your reservation.  Or make your reservations online

In the coming weeks, there will be lots more information about keynote speakers, conference sessions, and social activities.  Check back on the ILA website where you’ll also find membership information…remember the above scholarships will be awarded to ILA members

OverDrive's Big Library Read

Starts This Week

Big Library Read is literally a global reading program.  It’s a worldwide digital version of a local book discussion club.  Sponsored by OverDrive, this program represents an opportunity to connect your local readers with book lovers around the world as they read and discuss the same book at the same time without wait lists or holds.

Held three times each year, the next Big Library Read starts on July 13 with the title The Girl in His Shadow by Audrey Blake. The title will be available in eBook and audiobook formats for simultaneous downloads from July 13-27.

Point your patrons to BRIDGES on July 13 to download the book and to the Big Library Read website for the discussion guide and discussion forum.  Plus find lots of graphics to help with local promotion at the button below, everything from bookmarks to flyers, social media graphics, and a press release.

Described as an unforgettable historical fiction novel about one woman who believed in scientific medicine before the world believed in her.  From Good Reads: “London 1845. Raised by the eccentric surgeon Dr. Horace Croft after losing her parents to a deadly pandemic, the orphan Nora Beady knows little about conventional life. While other young ladies were raised to busy themselves with needlework and watercolors, Nora was trained to perfect her suturing and anatomical illustrations of dissections. Women face dire consequences if caught practicing medicine, but in Croft's private clinic Nora is his most trusted--and secret--assistant. That is until the new surgical resident Dr. Daniel Gibson arrives.

Dr. Gibson has no idea that Horace's bright and quiet young ward is a surgeon more qualified than even himself. In order to protect Dr. Croft and his practice from scandal and collapse Nora must learn to play a new and uncomfortable role--that of a proper young lady. But pretense has its limits. Nora cannot turn away and ignore the suffering of patients even if it means giving Gibson the power to ruin everything she's worked for. And when she makes a discovery that could change the field forever, Nora faces an impossible choice…”

Plan to connect your library with others around the world during
OverDrive’s next Big Library Read beginning July 13.

OverDrive’s Big Library Read

This Week ...

First of Three Author Presentations

This is great programming news to share with your library staff, board, and local book clubs.  The three authors of the 2022 All Iowa Reads titles will appear in virtual visits beginning this week.  The State Library is sponsoring these conversations to give Iowans a chance to hear from the All Iowa Reads authors.  The author presentations are free and open to the public, but note that registration is required.

At each event, the authors will be joined by a moderator to discuss their books, their creative process, and to address questions from the virtual audience.  Attendees will have the option to submit a question ahead of time when registering; otherwise people are encouraged to ask questions in chat during the event. The author visits will NOT be recorded.

This will be especially interesting programming for local library book clubs to enjoy.  Library staff can facilitate and promote these author talks by downloading printable PDF posters to display in the library and to send in direct marketing to book club members.  Find the promo posters at the button below.

July 14 with Jennifer Longo

The dates and times for each author visit is listed on the event webpage.  PLEASE NOTE: for these three events, registration is not handled through IALearns.  Instead, click on the DATE(s) to open the online registration form.
