Enrich Iowa Reports For FY22

Due By July 31st

Libraries that receive Enrich Iowa funds through the Open Access, Interlibrary Loan, or Direct State Aid programs must submit reports by July 31.  Library directors will need to file Enrich Iowa Reports relaying your library’s Open Access and ILL transactions.  In addition, directors need to report what was purchased with your library’s share of Direct State Aid funding.

Open Access

Enables eligible Iowans to check out physical materials at over 600 participating Iowa public and academic libraries. As a result, Iowans have greater access to more library resources, more choices in library service, and the convenience of using a library where they work, shop or visit.  Click here for the Open Access Report Form for FY22

Interlibrary Loan

Provides Iowans with equal access to library resources by encouraging and supporting interlibrary loan among all types of libraries. Participating libraries agree to lend their materials to other libraries for use by their customers and receive a subsidy per loan. More than 200,000 interlibrary loans are made annually through the program.  Important Note: No report is necessary if all loans were made through the SILO ILL System or through OCLC Resource Sharing. Use the ILL Request for Reimbursement Online Form only if you have any ILL loans beyond those made through the SILO-ILL or OCLC-ILL to report.  If you do, this form is not yet ready, check back on the State Library website in the coming days

Direct State Aid

Awards Iowa’s public libraries funding for meeting service standards.  The standards program, outlined in the document In Service to Iowa: Public Library Standards, is intended to achieve consistency in library service statewide and to illuminate best practices.  Click here for the Direct State Aid Online Report Form FY22

The Open Access and Direct State Aid Reports require a user name and password, the  same user name and password assigned to your library for completing the Annual Survey.  If you need help accessing this information, contact your District Office or Toni Blair at the State Library Des Moines Office.

Next Boardroom Webinar August 30th

Making Numbers Count

The next installment of The Boardroom series is scheduled for August 30th (6:00-7:30PM)  And this session  brings another book into the discussion: Making Numbers Count: The Art and Science of Communicating Numbers by Chip Heath and Karla Starr (c2022)  Chip Heath, along with his brother Dan, have authored several books, including two used previously in The Boardroom:
The Power of Moments and Upstream.

The fall of the year is the run-up to budget time, when attention turns to compiling library statistics—lots of statistics.  Data is needed for annual reports, stats are needed to share with city and county funders. This discussion looks at how library boards can better communicate the cost of providing library service by flipping numbers into  memorable stories.  With a big assist from the ideas in Making Numbers Count like “vividness, perspective cues, and emotional measuring sticks.”

From Amazon: “Author Chip Heath has excelled at teaching others about making ideas stick and here, in Making Numbers Count, he outlines specific principles that reveal how to translate a number into our brain’s language. This book is filled with examples of extreme number makeovers, vivid before-and-after examples that take a dry number and present it in a new way…”

There is no expectation that attendees read the book prior to the program.  Attendance at this webinar helps satisfy Standard #8 “All members of the library board participate in continuing education each year … “

BRIDGES Invoices and Libby App

Last week, the State Library learned that invoices for FY2023 Bridges members will be delayed until sometime in August.  When the invoices are ready, they will be available in your Marketplace account.  Just log into your Marketplace account and check under the Billing menu.  For new directors or staff who are unsure of their Marketplace account, simply contact your Library Resource Tech for your District, they will be happy to help.

This additional BRIDGES news was shared in a bulletin in late June and concerns the Libby App.  Starting the week of July 25, this message will appear to your patrons using the OverDrive App: “In early 2023, the OverDrive App will be discontinued. Upgrade to Libby today!”  Later this year, this in-app message will be updated to remind users about this change.  So the BRIDGES team has pulled together the following resources to help your library staff and users make this transition:

 For Library Staff

Bookmark this Resource Center page for helpful FAQs, a preparation checklist, and staff training materials.

 For Library Users

In-app messaging will link users to this overview page for more information, FAQs, and helpful video tutorials.

How-to videos on Libby Help walk users through how to use the app.

Beginning in August, your users can sign up for virtual training sessions hosted by team OverDrive.

While Amazon has not yet accepted our submission of the Libby app to the Amazon Appstore, Kindle Fire users can now download the app onto their device manually. These steps are also linked at https://www.overdrive.com/apps/libby.

Posting on Behalf of Iowa WORKS

Samantha Bouwers shares this request from IowaWORKS: "As IowaWORKS tries to find effective ways to assist job seekers throughout Iowa, building a strong partnership with local area libraries can be the key. To gather more information about those you serve and how we can partner to provide the connection to training, career counseling, and resources (including unemployment insurance benefits) we would like to ask you a few questions.

Our goal is to help job seekers to find the resources they need to successfully connect with employers in your community, maximizing everyone’s efforts and optimizing limited resources and staffing. Thank you for your time and answers.  As we move forward, we may contact you for follow-up on how we can support you better. If we could have your answers by Thursday July 28, it would be greatly appreciated!"

On behalf of the State Library and IowaWORKS, thanks for your time in answering this survey!
