Arts and Entertainment

July 1, 2022

From: Space 4 Art

Thank you to those of you who  joined us for June Open Studios! It was great to see both new and familiar faces– we enjoyed spending the evening with you. We’re especially grateful to Anjanaé Hassell for sharing her dance practice with us! If you enjoyed her Krump performances as much as we did, make sure to follow her on Instagram and let her know! @the.anjanae We also invite you to enjoy her performance on our Youtube channel.

Space 4 Art is partnering with For Arts Sake Cosmetics! This San Diego County-based company sells art-inspired makeup that makes a difference. Each quarter, the company donates a percentage of its sales to a US arts nonprofit, and we're thrilled to be the recipient of their generosity for the upcoming quarter (July - September, 2022)! You can read about our partnership and ways to participate on our blog.

Space 4 Art is excited to participate in San Diego Gives this year! San Diego Gives is an online fundraiser that aims to “create a special day of giving across San Diego County, build a community resource for local nonprofit organizations, and connect people to the causes they care about most.”

The funds Space 4 Art raises through San Diego Gives will help us continue providing artist housing and studio space at 50-60% of the cost of average local rental rates. While our own rent has increased significantly, the rental freeze we put into place for our artists during the original COVID-19 shutdown remains in effect. We need your help to KEEP artists living and creating in America’s Finest City. Early giving begins July 16th– mark your calendars and visit our blog to find out how your donation of $5 or $500 makes our work possible.

As a token of our appreciation, each San Diego Gives donor will receive one of our #MakeSpace4Art stickers designed with love by S4A Resident Artist Jonny Hoolko!

Have you participated in one of the City’s Park Social events yet?! Artists and collectives have been commissioned by the City of San Diego “to develop and present eighteen temporary works in San Diego that relate to a space or spaces in the City’s park system and directly connect the park goer and the park, sparking dialogue and encouraging people to get out into the parks and experience them in new unexpected ways.”

Space 4 Art’s own Armando De La Torre will be producing Spring Tide: A Pop-up Festival on Saturday, July 30th at Southcrest Recreation Center. “Spring Tide will leverage the folk traditions of storytelling, puppetry, musical performance, and contemporary community engagement ideas in meaningful art exchanges that highlight the healing of generosity and sustainable environmental practices. Community partners and volunteers will offer services to the community and support the overall narrative of the art event with fun workshops and art activities.” Visit the Park Social Website for more information.
