The Library Reading Corner - June 2022

Government and Politics

June 7, 2022

From: City of Goleta

Welcome to the Library Reading Corner for June 2022

A Note from Library Director Allison Gray:

Welcome to the June issue of the Reading Corner! We have so many great things planned for summer including our Summer Reading Program, the return of our Goleta Writers’ Workshop in-person meetings, a stuffed animal sleepover and so much more! Read on to see what’s happening at your local branch.

Do you know how much money you can save using a public library? I love the Library Value Calculator (https://ilovelibraries.org/what-libraries-do/calculator/), it lets you look up how much money you can save with one trip to the library. For example, if family visited one of the Goleta and Santa Ynez Valley Library branches and borrowed the following: three adult books, 10 children’s books, one book on CD, downloaded two e-books, borrowed four DVDs and one Museum Pass, the calculator adds up the value of those items and gives an estimated saving of $296.50!

The Goleta City Council was recently presented with a very healthy Book and Materials budget for our upcoming 2022/23 Fiscal Year. I am optimistic this funding will allow us to purchase an amazing number of books, books on CD, DVDs, magazines, Library of Things items, museum and park passes, and so much more for users of all ages and interests.

Lastly, as a reminder to our patrons, please remember that Santa Barbara items must now be returned to Santa Barbara Libraries (Santa Barbara, Carpinteria, Eastside, and Montecito). The Santa Barbara Library System will be leaving the Black Gold Cooperative Library System effective July 1, 2022, and there will no longer be regular shipment between the two branches. This means that you will have to return their materials to their library and anything you check out from Goleta cannot be returned to Santa Barbara. There will be a short grace period to phase into this, but it’s best to get into the habit early!

Get Ready for the Summer Reading Program!

The 2022 Summer Reading Program will kick off on Friday, June 3rd and run through Saturday, July 30th. This year our program will be fully in-person for the first time in two years and includes categories for all ages! This year's theme – Oceans of Possibilities – encourages our community to explore the amazing world of reading and to discover the variety of resources available at your library.

As in past years, children and teens will be able to earn prizes at different milestones based on the number of books they read, and adults will be able to enter tickets in weekly prize drawings for each book they read. Reading in all formats is welcome, including print books, graphic novels, eBooks and audiobooks. To get started, visit us in-person at the Goleta Valley Library, Isla Vista Bookvan, Buellton Library, or Solvang Library to pick up a reading log!

Click here to view the full calendar of events and to see a list of the incredible prizes you can earn this summer at the Goleta Valley Library! Thank you to our local sponsors who generously donated reading incentives to this year’s program. Patrons of the Buellton and Solvang Libraries can visit their local libraries for more program and prize information.
