DES MOINES - State Treasurer Roby Smith presented Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa with a check for their unclaimed funds in the Great Iowa Treasure Hunt. “There’s only one thing sweeter than a Caramel Delight or Thin Mint, and that’s being able to return more than $1,900 to Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa,” said Smith. “This is a great reminder to all Iowa businesses, big and small, to search and see if they have unclaimed funds.”

Katie Vine, Director of Philanthropy, accepted the check on behalf of Girl Scouts of Greater Iowa. “We look every year for unclaimed property and when we showed up on the list this year, we knew it would be a simple process to get through,” said Vine. “We appreciate the work to help us recover this money; it makes a huge difference for us!”

“Search today in less time than it takes to say ‘yes’ to buying cookies from your favorite Girl Scout,” concluded Smith. “You never know what treasure is waiting to be found!”

The Great Iowa Treasure Hunt, administered by Treasurer Smith, is Iowa’s only legitimate source of unclaimed property. Each year, millions of dollars are turned over after financial institutions and businesses lose contact with the owner. Examples include forgotten checking and savings accounts, stocks, uncashed checks, life insurance policies, utility refunds and safe deposit box contents.

Iowans and businesses in the state can search for their name at GreatIowaTreasureHunt.gov. It’s secure, free and easy to use. Follow the Treasurer on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to stay up-to-date on all areas of the office.
