Republicans Will Never Stop Attacking Reproductive Freedoms

On May 2nd, marks the second anniversary of the leak of the Supreme Court’s decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization when the country learned that Donald Trump would succeed in his cruel plot to rip away reproductive freedom, and the aftermath has been nothing short of horrific.

The Democratic Party of New Mexico released the following statement on the second anniversary of the leaked Supreme Court decision on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, which opened the floodgates to extreme MAGA abortion bans across the country:

“It may be somber to think about, but just two years ago, Roe v. Wade was the law of the land across America.

“No matter how much Republicans and Trump repackage their plans to take away abortion rights, they are responsible for the abortion bans across the country and want to go even further. Come November, voters will remember that Trump continually boasted about the role he played in overturning Roe v. Wade and said over and over again that he would ban abortion nationally if given the chance.”

The Dobbs decision opened the floodgates to extreme MAGA abortion bans across the country. Just yesterday, an extreme, near-total MAGA abortion ban went into effect in Florida that Trump "proudly" paved the way for with the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Just next door, Arizona Republicans and their State Supreme Court attempted to uphold a pre-statehood law from 1864 to ban abortion from the moment of conception, with no exceptions for rape or incest, which Democratic Governor Katie Hobbs repealed earlier today.

MAGA Republicans continue to show they are hellbent on eliminating reproductive rights, no matter what they say, as nearly two dozen states have already banned or restricted access to abortion. Just this week, Donald Trump endorsed allowing states to punish & prosecute anyone who has an abortion.

Currently, New Mexico remains a safe place for abortion and reproductive rights because of the actions taken by Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and Democratic leaders in our state legislature to overturn New Mexico’s outdated abortion ban in 2021, which preemptively protected abortion access in our state before the Dobbs decision. In 2023, New Mexico Democrats enshrined protections into law that prevent municipalities from placing restrictions on reproductive care and prohibit the sharing of this health care information to keep our patients and providers safe.

However, New Mexico must do its part to reelect our three pro-choice Democratic U.S. Representatives and Senator Martin Heinrich so President Biden can deliver on his goal to codify the protections of Roe into law across the country, restoring the rights Americans relied on for nearly 50 years.
