"ANOTHER TAKEOVER"

A couple newsletters ago, my commentary featured a story about the latest fad..."street takeovers," a potentially dangerous craze where announcements as to where and when the event is going to be is sent over social media.

The event is held on a popular street corner and is all about 'taking the corner over" with several cars performing stunts in the middle of the street with several hundred young people as an audience in the street as well; many times, the cars have lost control and have come close to injuring or killing one or more of the audience members."

Over the weekend, two young girls were killed at a "street takeover" in Compton. So, the potential danger now has become a reality.

Don't think it wont happen here in North Hollywood. There have been many occurrences right in front of our Chamber office, in the big parking lot, right in the middle of our businesses. No doubt, there probably have been more that just haven't been reported.

As these events are advertised by social media and word of mouth, it's hard for the police to discover these locations ahead of time, and by the time the perpetrators know that the police are on their way, (they have this planned) and move to their next location.

But, this is not impossible to control. If law enforcement can penetrate the "takeover" group, they can nip this in the bud before it gets out of control in NoHo and loose young lives to this senseless activity.

Get loud! Email or call your counsel representative and/or law enforcement and voice your concern. The more we all "express our distress," the sooner we'll be satisfied that a plan is in action.

CELEBRATE FREEDOM!

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It is also often observed for celebrating African-American culture. Originating in Galveston, Texas, it has been celebrated annually on June 19 in various parts of the United States since 1865.

Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state, were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.

It is observed this year on Monday, June 20th. Since it is a federal holiday, banks and other federal buildings will be closed.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is the body’s natural defense mechanism. It is your immune system’s response to cellular injury through increased blood flow, capillary dilatation, leucocyte infiltration, and the production of chemical mediators. In essence, it is a perceived threat or injury that causes inflammation.

Inflammation is a complex process involving the body’s white blood cells and the chemicals that they produce, such as antibodies and cytokines. These are released into the blood or affected tissues to fight any type of foreign invader. Inflammation protects you from hostile microbes by eliminating toxic agents and repairs damaged tissue.

While inflammation can be a necessary and even beneficial to your body, it can also be harmful. Inflammation acts as both “friend and foe” in the body depending on the type of inflammation.

The friend is acute inflammation. The foe is chronic, low-grade, systemic inflammation.

Inflammation is an important part of our immune response. It is the body’s way of healing itself after an injury, repairing damaged tissue, and defending itself against pathogens. In this way, inflammation is beneficial. However, inflammation can also be harmful to your health. Learning what causes inflammation can help you protect yourself.

There are two types of inflammation, acute and chronic.

Acute inflammation is your body’s natural defense against damaged cells, Viruses, and other harmful invaders. It starts quickly and helps the body heal itself.

Chronic inflammation is systemic, low-grade inflammation that lasts for months or years. It is the common cause of many health issues. In fact, chronic inflammation has been linked to almost every major health condition and disease. This is partly due to an excessive production of free radicals that can be damaging to cells if not controlled.

Not just one thing causes inflammation in the body. An inflammatory diet, blood sugar imbalances, and leaky gut syndrome cause chronic inflammation. Sleep loss, chronic stress, environmental toxins, and chronic infections are additional factors that lead to chronic inflammation. 

It is critical to understand and address these factors to achieve optimal health.
